Comet Shoemaker–Levy 9 impacted Jupiter on July, 1994.  This comet was previously designated D/1993 F2 and was anticipated to come close to Jupiter.  The comet consquently broke apart before it struck Jupiter. No one, including its discoverer, could have imagined how intense and dynamic the impact would have been.
