Perhaps Dr. Kerry Weaver (Laura Innes) wasn't always the most likeable person on television. Maybe she occasionally did things that were a bit reprehensible to further her career. But Kerry was also a prominent cast member on the NBC drama "E.R.", one of the longest-running series of all time. And more importantly for the purposes of this program, in Season 7 she was a woman dealing with the pressures of being a closeted lesbian after becoming briefly involved with psychiatrist Kim Legaspi (Elizabeth Mitchell). That led to her outing in Season 8, and a relationship with firefighter Sandy Lopez (Lisa Vidal) that played out on our television screens for three years. Naturally, as one of the very, VERY few shows with multiple lesbian characters (let's not forget Maggie Doyle) on commercial TV at the turn of the millennium, E.R. instantly became a popular fandom for femslash fanfic authors. Co-host Lara Zielinsky and I will be speaking with two of those authors tonight. One is Georgia Beers, author of such Kerry/Kim fics as "Admissions" and "Mendings". And the other is Susan P., who has paired Kerry with Sandy, Kim, Abby, Randi . . . shall I go on? We'll talk about their work, along with how accurate the depiction of lesbians really was on E.R., why there don't seem to be a lot more on TV now than there were then, and why Kerry/Kim was so popular, considering Kerry was with Sandy much longer.
