He is the former mayor of Cincinnati, state treasurer and secretary of state of Ohio, undersecretary at the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the US Ambassador to the United Nations Human Rights Commission. He is currently a senior fellow with the Family Research Council, visiting professor at Liberty University School of Law, and on the board of directors of the NRA, Club for Growth, National Taxpayers Union, and the Ashbrook Center for Public Affairs.
