It begins with her urgency as an eighteen-year-old woman initiating her search for her birth parents. Her recollection includes court petitions, letters, Division of Social Service documents, and other original documents usually buried behind the lock and key of the law. In this memoir, she narrates the unearthing of her history and that of her family. Some of her discoveries are filled with pain, while others are joyful, including locating sisters, another brother, and eventually nieces and a nephew. A story of how one woman comes to terms with her identity, Searching for the Castle tells of real people doing the best they can to live and love in the often heartbreaking circumstances of life. As Ohrstrom shares her journey to find her birth parents, she reveals her emotions throughout the process, discovering that her identity is self-created, but also that her being is governed, in part, by her ancestors and family lines. Searching for the Castle communicates the message that love creates families and that the family to which Ohrstrom belonged in foster care gave her a mother, father, and family filled with love and decency. 00:45:00AACAdoptionNewsandViewsnoadoption,adoptee,adoptive parents, search and reunion, post adoption educationJoin us Friday September 19th@ 10:00 EDT as Pam Kroskie interviews Barbara Ohrstrom Like cowboys turning in the saddle to look at where they came from, SearchiThe Girl Behind The Doorhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/aacadoptionnewsandviews/2014/08/27/the-girl-behind-the-doorFamilyhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/aacadoptionnewsandviews/2014/08/27/the-girl-behind-the-door/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/aacadoptionnewsandviews/2014/08/27/the-girl-behind-the-doorWed, 27 Aug 2014 20:00:00 GMTThe Girl Behind The Door  Please join us Wednesday August 27, 2014 at 4:00 pm EST as Pam Kroskie interviews John Brooks-about his memoir- A Father's Journey Into the Mystery of Attachment. Her pixyish appearance and ferocious competitive drive quickly earned her the status of media darling. But behind the fame, the flawless floor routines, and the million-dollar smile, her life was a series of challenges and hardships. Off Balance vividly delineates each of the dominating characters who contributed to Moceanu’s rise to the top, from her stubborn father and long-suffering mother to her mercurial coach, Bela Karolyi. Here, Moceanu finally shares the haunting stories of competition, her years of hiding injuries and pain out of fear of retribution from her coaches, and how she hit rock bottom after a public battle with her parents. But medals, murder plots, drugs, and daring escapes aside (all of which figure into Moceanu’s incredible journey), the most unique aspect of her life is the family secret that Moceanu discovers, opening a new and unexpected chapter in her adult life. A mysterious letter from a stranger reveals that she has a second sister—born with a physical disability and given away at birth—who has nonetheless followed in Moceanu’s footsteps in an astonishing way. It’s also the story of how one poor Guatemalan woman, Mildred Alvarado, reunited with her kidnapped daughters against all odds—and how the trusting American housewife slated to adopt one of those children, Elizabeth Emanuel, accidentally became a reformer dedicated to an ethical adoption system. They were told to keep their secret, move on and forget. Though unknown by him for 18 years, the secret was common knowledge to everyone he knew. Years later, Licktieg returns to his Kansas farm home to confront his adoptive parents and his eight brothers and sisters to get the whole truth behind the lies told to him since birth. Now, aware of the truth, he seeks to know all he can about the “open secret” shared by his family and their entire home town. Open Secret is a fascinating story of Lickteig’s life, told extremely well by the only person who can, Lickteig himself. The film begins by teasing the viewer with the promise of a juicy family secret. Once revealed the secret becomes the least of the reasons to become engrossed in this documentary. The relationships between mother and son, mother and daughter, brother and sister are tested, destroyed, rebuilt and recreated, all the while watching the emotional turmoil churn within a man searching for answers and clarity in a murky history of lies. 00:30:00AACAdoptionNewsandViewsnoAdoptee search, adoptees, birth moms, first moms, adoptionJoin Pam Kroskie and Steve Lickteig on February 24 @1:00 pm EST.   On the evening of his high school graduation, Steve Lickteig discovered a shocking secretPam Slatonhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/aacadoptionnewsandviews/2012/01/27/pam-slatonFamilyhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/aacadoptionnewsandviews/2012/01/27/pam-slaton/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/aacadoptionnewsandviews/2012/01/27/pam-slatonFri, 27 Jan 2012 18:00:00 GMTPam Slaton Family is Pam Slaton's passion—whether it's her own or someone else's. Susan was forty-three years old before she ordered a DNA test and learned the truth that she had long suspected: that she was adopted. By this time, the woman she had always called her mother, who had kept the adoption a secret, was dying, so Susan never got to talk with her directly on this important matter of identity. Then came the long, involved search for her half-siblings and her biological family roots, a roller-coaster of emotions that uncovered secret after secret, revealing truth after truth. The most important truth Susan learned from her quest was that she had been wanted and loved by both her mothers.      00:31:00AACAdoptionNewsandViewsnoadoptee,late discovery adoptee, adoption, birth mother, adopted parentsJoin us as host Pam Kroskie interviews Susan Bennett about her memoir "Late Discoveries"- an adoptees quest for truth. Her book fits perfectly into the literary and entertainment “reality” trend of real people telling their real life stories. Patti is the older sister of the legendary film actress Goldie Hawn. At the exact time when Goldie’s star was rising, Patti’s star was shooting out of control.  Her book is a deeply personal first-hand account of what it was like to be trapped in an unwanted pregnancy at the close of an era where home economics took precedence over sex education. It tells the story of the last generation of young women to experience life on the eve of the sexual revolution of the sixties and the passing of legislation legalizing abortion.  It is a unique time in history, foreign to an entire generation of women, that resulted in an incredible number of reunions between birth parents and their children --- 20, 30 and 40 years after.  00:31:00AACAdoptionNewsandViewsnofirst mom, birth mom, adoptee, adoptive parents, adoptionPlease join us November 18th at 1:00 pm EST for our next show with author/publicist Patti Hawn-   GOOD GIRLS DON’T is the debut effort of Los Angeles filmBrian Stanton on AAC Adoption News and Viewshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/aacadoptionnewsandviews/2011/10/28/brian-stanton-on-aac-adoption-news-and-viewsFamilyhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/aacadoptionnewsandviews/2011/10/28/brian-stanton-on-aac-adoption-news-and-views/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/aacadoptionnewsandviews/2011/10/28/brian-stanton-on-aac-adoption-news-and-viewsFri, 28 Oct 2011 17:00:00 GMTBrian Stanton on AAC Adoption News and Views We are excited to welcome Brian Stanton to  AAC Adoption News and Views.
