She spent over 12 years in Corporate America in the Alternative Investments and Financial Services Industries. She has a MBA in Finance and Management Information Systems and a BS in Accounting and Business Administration. Like many, she was raised with the notion to go to college, get a degree, get a good job and make a lot of money. In early 2008, Tiaa grew increasingly tired of Corporate America. She often felt trapped and unappreciated. She yearned to find a better way. She enjoyed her field but did not enjoy what came with it. During this time, a friend introduced her to the book, “The Secret”. This book opened her mind to believe anything is possible. It was at that very moment, Tiaa decided to follow her passion in Interior Design. After taking courses and endless research, Exclusively Yours Interiors LLC was born in Oct 2008. Tiaa continued to work full time in Corporate America while doing her Interior Design business part-time. Her design business was slowly flourishing however due to the multiple constraints and stress in Corporate America, it became difficult to market and network the way she needed to. She knew to totally breakaway from corporate, she had to create multiple streams of income. On Christmas of 2009, Tiaa’s mother gave her a solid perfume scent from Soul Purpose. Something about Soul Purpose resonated with her spiritually. Soul Purpose’s goal is to help entrepreneurs launch and sustain viable socially-responsible businesses that create wealth, stimulate growth and revitalize communities across the country and globally. This is done by offering an exquisite line of all natural health and beauty products. For Tiaa, joining Soul Purpose was a no-brainer. It was a perfect fit to what she wanted to achieve. Once Tiaa joined Soul Purpose, six days later, her corporate job let her go. For example, her uncle would buy a pack of cookies for her and instead of eating them, she would sell the individual packs at school for a higher price and keep the profit to buy more. When Anita came to America she had that same entrupernual spirit, but things took a turn when Anita's American dream started to slip away. Things where not as she expected it to be. While attending Rutgers University, she knew her passion was to help people and realize she could do this while working for herself. After trying 9 different network marketing positions and failed in every one of them, simply because they were not the right fit for her. In June 2008, she got laid off from a med size firm, as a Junior Accountant, she took that as an opportunity to change her career and follow her passion of helping people. And increasingly, art enthusiasts are realizing that the same people who developed this sublime musical art form have also been creating its visual equivalent. Over 25 years ago, when Karen and Sharon Mackey (known as the Mackey Twins) were high school teachers, they visited art galleries once a week and spent hours purchasing prints. It was a weekly obsession, without fail – browsing through racks of work by artists of color and receiving quite an education from gallery owners. As they advanced The Mackey Twins recognized the responsibility and value of acquiring original work, but didn’t know how to afford it on a teacher’s salary. Fortunately, a loyal and faithful gallery owner showed them how and The Mackey Twins began amassing collections of work (thank you FB). While they felt proud of their collection, they were haunted by the fact that they were not doing enough to support artists of color who were not sufficiently represented or supported in larger artistic venues. This awareness sparked an unyielding commitment and drive to create venues to educate and expose people to artists of color; hence, our maxim- Driven, Guided and Directed By the Spirit- to host art shows featuring renowned and up and coming artists and position art in prominent arenas.00:30:00Tears To TriumphnoKaren and Sharon Mackey,Sky LaRose,Art in Harlem,Empowering women in Art,Black ArtistsMost Americans recognize that one of black America's greatest contributions to the 20th century was jazz. It is less common but more aggressive in women under age 50. Approximately 77% of cases occur in women past that age, particularly in white, Hawaiian and African-American women. African-American women are more likely to be diagnosed with advanced disease and have the highest death rate. Today's guest, Maimah Karmo is the Founder of Tigerlily Foundation and a three year survivor of breast cancer, who most recently received the Congressional Black Caucus Leadership in Advocacy Award for her work with young women and breast cancer. On February 28, 2006, at 4:45 p.m., she was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. She had no family history of breast cancer; and was only 32-years old. While undergoing chemotherapy, she created Tigerlily Foundation to educate, empower, and advocate for and support young women affected by breast cancer. Tigerlily Foundation provides women with services to help, while they are in treatment. Since starting Tigerlily, Maimah has dedicated her life to helping young women around the world. She is a speaker and has appeared in various media outlets, to include Essence, Ladies Home Journal, Women and Cancer, Cure Magazine and more. She has also been featured on Fox 5, ABC 7, News Channel 8, WUSA 9, the Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning America and numerous national radio stations. In 2009, Maimah was awarded L’Oreal Paris’ Woman of Worth award. Most dear to her heart is being the mother of a beautiful 7-year old girl, whom she adores. Vanessa Allen of the Phenomenal Women’s Alliance What defines leadership? Some define leadership as the power to influence people to move in a direction that you believe in your heart is a good direction. It is also the ability to balance pressure and support. Where is women leadership in a bad economy? Vanessa Allen a seasoned Human Resource veteran asked her self that question and in 2006 when she felt that the economic climate could possible take a turn. Allen specialized in Talent Management, Staffing and Recruiting, Leadership and Career Development and it became apparent to her that organizations have a tendency to place and label employees and placed them to benefit the bottom line profit. The corporations never took in to consideration the employee's innovation and talents, which could potentially yield a win-win scenario for both parties. With many of these same companies laying individuals off in droves many talented women are now looking to leverage their talent. With questions like how can I advance ourselves in a crazy climate like this? Phenomenal Women's Alliance, Inc. (PWA) has the answer and challenges women from all walks of life and socioeconomic platforms-to embrace their talent and purpose, cultivate their talent, and to become authentic. Join Dr. Elisa our Licensed Clinician and founder of PD Consultants, Minal Bopiah, journalist and founder of Brevity and Wit and Sky LaRose for a conversation on women and leadership. Social hierarchy, impossible relationships, increased responsibility, false friends, economic challenges, love lost, family crises, spiritual searches, and finding oneself are just a few examples of the trials they endure. Sadly, many young black women are too afraid, too proud, or too ashamed to ask for help. Listen in as you hear stories from our contributors to our newest book Souls of My Young Sisters: Young Women Break Their Silence with Personal Stories That Will Change Your Life from Kensington Publishing from the Souls of My Sisters book collection. In Desperation, written by Ebony Fletcher, involves painful memories of a man she once loved: “He pulled the revolver out of his coat jacket. He said to me, ‘If I can’t have you, nobody will’…We started to fight for the gun, and he shot me in my leg. He sat on my back after I fell to the floor. He put the gun directly on the back of my head and pulled the trigger…” In her essay I Have a Stalker by Milani Rose. After enduring a painful childhood, Rose tells a hurtful story of betrayal: “I decided to end our friendship, and that’s when it all began. It started with emails, Facebook posts, fake Twitter accounts, and then she graduated to distributing the ultimate — a sex tape." Control is the goal with a partner yelling, threaten acts of violence, isolating family members, breaking objects and controlling resources like money and time. It can then escalate to slapping, kicking and pulling of hair. There is a number of dating violence that go unreported among college age women. One such student Melonie Berry contributor to Tears To Triumph page 223 shares her decision to leave her son’s father who at first was verbally abusive and then it progressed to violence. “In a drunken state my son’s father began to beat me in front of our then two-year-old. That was it,” stated Melonie. After leaving her boyfriend Melonie would begin her day at 5am, walking to the bus stop with her asthmatic son sometimes in the snow in order to get to classes. It was her perseverance and ability to turn her pain into triumph that Melonie completed her semester with a 3.5 GPA. The many women we have talked to who have made a major change have all acknowledged that the state they were in was not indicative of who they were as a person. This week's guest, Crystal Dwyer, explains her story: My realization began about three years ago. I am a former model who fell in love, got married and had three children. For 14 years of marriage I was a devoted wife that drove my children to practice, decorated my homes, hosted dinner parties for clients, volunteered, and assisted my husband with his real estate and investment businesses. I did it all. I have always been intuitive and have been described as graceful and humorous and sought out for advice from my friends and family. Often I found myself providing my loved ones, including my husband, with a blue print on how to transform their lives and eliminate obstacles. I found that people just naturally accepted pain, struggle and suffering as part of their existence. I felt it was my passion and purpose in life to pursue Transformational Life Coaching a unique program utilizing the powerful tools of Hypno-therapy, Emotional Freedom Technique, and Meditation. I approached my husband excitedly with the possibilities for my business and he said no. I could not believe it. I was in tears. I brought up the conversation again this time I had the pro’s all lined up. Again no! The no hit me like a ton of bricks and now I had to make a decision about my own life. 00:30:00Tears To Triumphnowomen, crystal dwyer, decisions, life, changeThe difference between state and trait is the difference between understanding "what you are" and "what you are going through."
