Helen Lindsey, the first African-American Female to
Receive a Bilateral Hand Transplant
August 6, 2009, Atlanta GA – This story starts off a little frighten, here is the recap -”It was like a bolt of lightning. ‘Everything just fell apart over a very short period of time,’ Dr. Giessel added. ‘Multiple organs were failing. We were juggling about 15 balls at once’. However, her lungs already were failing, so she had to be connected to a ventilator; her kidneys stopped functioning, so she had to go on dialysis; and she lapsed into a coma.” -Richmond Dispatch News
With the faith in GOD her mother the late, Ms. Josephine D. Leak standing fast on the words of the scriptures of the bible she held in her hand each day as Helen laid in a coma for 45 days. She awakened after having had survived the Bacterial Meningitis that resulted in a quadruple amputation that almost took her life. She fought for her life and she cheated death not once but three times after surviving 3 cardiac arrests in the midst of those 45 days. She has taken on her world with vengeance as an amputee. She knows that she will have some high mountains to climb, however she has no doubt in her mind, body and soul that she can come through a very tough operation. Helen has plans to reach her goals. The first goal is raising money to assist in paying for the medical expenses while in Pittsburgh after having had the transplants done. The Lindsey’s Team will be planning a series of fundraisers to offset those costs.
The first event will be held on August 23rd from 6pm to 12am at the jazzy Aliyah’s Island Grill located on 2520 Piedmont Rd, (Buckhead) Atlanta, GA. There is no cover charge and it is open to the public. The Team will be present to accept the donations. If you cannot the event, you can mail a donation to Helen Lindsey P.O. Box 4203, Marietta, GA 30061, or make a donation on-line at www.helenlindseysstory.com. Your support will be more than welcome!
There is room or need to feel sorry for her. She is all about making a different in this world, a better place for her family’s life and others to live. One of her goals is to reach out to War Veterans who are amputees returning from the wars overseas. She served her country as a 1st LT (p) Army Nurse, at Kenner Army Community Hospital, in dual roles as a Field Nurse with the 85th Evacuation Hospital; Intensive Care Nursing was her specialty prior to being Honorably Discharged in 1989. She later became a civilian nurse, at Henrico Doctor’s Hospital in Richmond, VA on a PICU Unit 1 of 2 black nurses’ at that time; cardiology became her sub-specialty and wants to return to nursing. In the meantime or after her operations, she will be speaking at various functions such as Veterans Hospitals across the country.
‘Come on this journey into the life of Helen Lindsey a quadruple amputee who has turned every tragedy, every disaster, every tribulation into a personal triumph,’
