Dr Mathias Mpande is a minerals economist and also a lecturer at the University of Zambia in the school of mines. He served as Deputy Minister of Mines & Mineral Resources in the first MMD government. Dr Mpande has been a strong advocate on issues of mining conglomerates in the nation contributing to the national treasury through standard and windfall taxes. He has persistently stated that the nation’s organ tasked to oversee taxation in various sectors including mines, Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) neither has the capacity to collect income-related taxes nor to audit mining firms as most of them were controlled from headquarters that were outside the country.

Dr Mpande also called for the mining firms to pay adequate taxes from their huge profits and he joins us on Perspectives to discuss these challenges and how they have affected Zambia’s economy over decades.

Perspectives airs live at 8 a.m. PST, 11 a.m. EST, 16 hrs GMT, 17 hrs CAT.
