There has been growing discussion surrounding 21 year old, former ZCAS student; Iris Kaingu who was accused and recently found guilty of producing indecent materials by Lusaka magistrate Prince Mwinga.

The case has created a buzz amongst Zambians on social media for a variety of reasons. Namely Iris’s father being the MMD vice-president and  PF political , Michael Kaingu who many view as the reason for his daughter’s imprisonment woes.

Iris’s case has raised a lot of questions about Zambia’s legal system; from the judiciary to the prisons. Namely:

  • In light of Zambia’s 48 years of independence, how has the Zambian legal system changed since 1964?
  • Has the legal system grown to reflect the values and morals of Zambians of today?
  • Can justice be found in Zambia’s legal system (We will discuss Iris’s case and if she has received a fair trial)
  • What are the implications of Iris’s trial for the Zambian public & for similar cases?
  • What are the positive aspects of the Zambian legal system and what can be done to correct the flaws?
