Hi,Jackie.I've just finished listening to "No More Secrets -...)and it really made me think about how easy it is to feel like you're the only one suffering-be it from depression,anxiety,etc.,etc.-ESPECIALLY when in the throes of these mind states. It's so good to be reminded that everyone suffers;it's so human to suffer. Also, hearing everyone's histories, and the devastating events that have happened to all of you:devastating enough to,pretty understandably, feel at times that the only way out of what must have been sheer hell, was to end your lives, but there you all were:talking, even laughing. What a lesson for anyone depressed, because it can be nearly impossible to imagine one can ever laugh again. That there really can be light at the end of the tunnel and you truly never know what's right around the corner.I love that John & Patricia are now so passionate about spreading the word to others,I think that's wonderful.I love the "tip" idea, too.Juat a list of small things people can do to lift their moods, even if it's just temporarily. That's a book in and of itself,if you ask me.Great interview.P.S.I hope this doesn't sound callous or anything, but I dyin' to know which Prince it was you were listening to ,Jackie!I as this as not only a Prince lover, but as a music lover myself:it's given me pleasure when nothing else was able to! Have a great day-Dess

Wanted to share an email I got today from Germany: Fantastic!!!! My name ist Mimi and I live in Germany. I just listened to your show with Dr. Gordon and it was absolutely FABOLOUS!!! I am 28 years old and I suffered from depression for more than 8 years, also taking all this medication, doing theray, you name it, I did it! 6 month ago I was on 3 different kinds of medication when I couldn´t get out of bed for a week, feeling so sick and depressed. I decided I will never swallow this pills again and just stopped taking them! Long story short. I finally discoverd a doctor who exactly told me the same things to do which you and Dr. Gordon were talking about. I started eating a vegan diet, exercising, etc... But also my new and fantastic psychiatrist studied acupuncture in China and has a method espcially for healing depression and negative thinking! After two appointments of acupuncture and 4 weeks of eating an vegan diet I started feeling true happyness again after 8 years and I have been fine since! I can´t believe that our Healthsystem not only in America, also here in Germany and prob. also in the rest of the world tells us that we NEED medication, when people have th epossibilities to try other things first! Doctors are not listening, they just prescribe. I can´t even tell how many times I was thining that nothing and nobody can help and I would just have to live the depression. More people need to know that they can make a decission to try other natural ways to heal. Every human being is different and so everybody needs to find their own individual way. Thanks for this wonderful show, which showed me again that I am on the right track with my new lifestyle and also sharing this with other people. A couple weeks ago I made a youtube video exactly about this topic. Maybe you want to check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgcylpUNnFQ All my best wishes Mimi

I am who I am. Many people make excuses for being who they are. You may be like me and talk too much, or you do something else that you feel makes you unloveable. My advice...be who you are always. I am a talk show host BECAUSE I LIKE TO TALK! Makes sense right. So I make no excuses for myself. I love me just the way I am.

I am crying as I listen to this show. I lost my mother to a neglectful hospital atmosphere. As a single, only child, I had no back up or relief. My surviving family members were all her older siblings and in bad shape themselves. I used to sit with her for up to 12 hours a day. Their was no hospital support. My heart sank when I had to leave, because I never knew if I'd see her alive again. Finally, she took ill in the night and I came running. She died the next day due to an heparin overdose. Sometimes, I blame myself

jsforeman

jsforeman

I disagree completely. 10-10-10 is about making decisions no matter how much money you make. Mymother-in-law is in her 70's and cleans hotel rooms and she uses 10-10-10. I also make no $ now and still use 10-10-10

Very informative and enlightening show except I do not think that Ms. Welch's theory would work if you are making minimum wage and living on the edge. That worker is at the mercy of too many forces not in their control. I know because I come from a long line of folks who worked hard for little money and just could not pick up and leave a job, no matter how draining it was.

Keep shining your light, you are drawing to you those that seek out a warm and inviting ear to hear them and welcome with without judgement. You are living your life's purpose and doing so quite beautifully! Thank you from all those who are afraid to speak out, thank you from those that cant speak out, and thank you of course from me! Join Jacqueline Foreman as she interviews Eric Marcus once again to discuss his newly revised book Why Suicide?: Answers to 200 of the Most Frequently Asked Questions about Suicide. Marcus (Is It a Choice?: Answers to 300 of the Most Frequently Asked Questions About Gays and Lesbians, LJ 6/1/93), who lost his own father to suicide at age 12, here seeks to demystify the enigma of suicide. He uses a question-and-answer format, with related questions grouped into chapters. The well-chosen selection of questions range from "Does everyone have thoughts of suicide?" to "What are the arguments against legalizing doctor-assisted suicide?" His responses reflect not only a knowledgeable and well-informed consideration of suicidology but also empathetic treatment. The typical response aims to educate by giving factual information and/or practical advice as well as to console by providing personal stories from suicide survivors. An appendix of resources includes a directory of suicide/crisis hotlines. While other books, such as George Howe Colt's The Enigma of Suicide (LJ 4/15/91), may provide a broader and more in-depth discussion of suicide as a phenomenon, Why Suicide? focuses primarily on consoling survivors and dispelling myths. A marvelous addition to suicidology collections as well as a solid choice for bibliotherapy; given the inexpensive price, it should find a place in every public or private library collection.

The Depression Cure: The 6-Step Program to Beat Depression without Drugs

Join Jacqueline Foreman and author of the book The Depression Cure: The 6-Step Program to Beat Depression without Drugs Stephen S. Ilardi, PhD. Most Americans work long hours, eat on the fly, and lead increasingly sedentary, isolated lives. Alongside this lifestyle, depression rates have skyrocketed: approximately 1 in 4 Americans will suffer from major depression at some point in their lives. Where have we gone wrong? Dr. Stephen Ilardi sheds light on our current predicament and reminds us: our bodies were never designed for the sleep-deprived, poorly nourished, frenzied pace of twenty-first century life. In fact, our genes have changed very little since the days of our hunter-gatherer ancestors and are still building, in effect, Stone Age bodies. Herein lies the key to breaking the cycle of depression. Inspired by the extraordinary resilience of aboriginal groups like the Kaluli of Papua New Guinea (who rarely suffer from depression), Dr. Ilardi prescribes an easy-to-follow, clinically proven program that harks back to what our bodies were originally made for—and need. Here you can find the road back to lasting health by integrating the following 6 elements into your life: an omega–3 rich diet; exercise; plenty of natural sunlight; ample sleep; social connections; and participation in meaningful tasks that leave little time for negative thoughts—all things that our ancestors had in abundance. Already, The Depression Cure program has delivered dramatic results, helping even those who have failed to respond to traditional medications. Interweaving the stories of many who have fought—and won—the battle against this debilitating illness, this groundbreaking book can illuminate the path to lifting the fog once and for all for you or a loved one.

Change Your Mind And Your Life Will Follow: 12 Simple Principles

Join Jacqueline Foreman when she interviews author Karen Casey about her book Change Your Mind And Your Life Will Follow: 12 Simple Principles. Veteran self-help author Casey's gentle advice is anchored in a strong spiritual commitment. Having given up alcohol and drugs in 1976, she developed many of the concepts she advocates through attending 12-step support groups. Casey firmly believes that the work of someone's life belongs only to that person and to God, and that we should thus each tend only our own garden. From this conviction flow several of her principles, such as refraining from judging others, recognizing that you cannot change friends or relatives, and learning to focus primarily on your life's journey rather than on the opinions and actions of others. Casey recommends quieting the mind by letting go of your ego and looking for the lesson in every experience and encounter, whether positive or negative. Although many of the insights and techniques are not new, Casey's voice is thoughtful and accessible. Readers with a belief in the power of God will be most amenable to her recommendations for a simpler, more rewarding life.

    Actress Keisha Knight Pulliam!

Join Jacqueline Foreman when she interviews actress Keisha Knight Pulliam live! Pulliam became the youngest actress ever to be nominated for an Emmy, at age six for best supporting actress. Even before that — at age 3 — she played Keshia on Sesame Street. Her character on The Cosby Show, Rudy, was known for being the "baby" of the family. She is ranked #19 in VH1's list of the "100 Greatest Kid Stars". Pulliam participated in and won a celebrity version of Fear Factor in September 2002. She also won a celebrity version of The Weakest Link. In 2004, Pulliam posed for a six-page lingerie and swimsuit layout in Black Men magazine in an attempt to get rid of her "little girl" image. The same year, she starred in Chingy's music video for "One Call Away". According to an interview on Real Talk with Jeanne Roberts of St. Louis, Pulliam performed in Donald Gray's play The Man of Her Dreams in the fall of 2006. In 2008, She joined the cast of Tyler Perry's House of Payne as Miranda, the new wife of Calvin Payne. The role earned her the 2009 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. In 2009, she portrayed Candy in the film Madea Goes To Jail.

No More Secrets - A Family Speaks About Depression, Anxiety and Attempted Suicide

The Gallaghers know what happy times look like - they lived in a great neighborhood, a comfortable home, they had a happy marriage, and four beautiful children. But when their family was ravaged by depression, they didn't know where to turn, or how to cope. Many lessons were learned the hard way. They have written a book as a family, to help others deal with difficult situations: NO MORE SECRETS A FAMILY SPEAKS ABOUT DEPRESSION, ANXIETY AND ATTEMPTED SUICIDE is the title of the book which is a compelling narrative of a family shattered by attempted suicide. It tells of a family's struggle to renew John's interest in life. Back when life was grand, the Gallaghers appeared on the Oprah Show regarding Patricia's book RAISING HAPPY KIDS ON A REASONABLE BUDGET. Oprah said, "Let's go on a visit to their home." It looked so perfect back then, John Gallagher playing ball with his kids in the yard, kids doing their chores, a happy family mealtime. Now, nine years later, the Gallagher family has begun to tell their story, and have found healing. They want to help other families in difficult situations; whether it is a parent struggling with depression, addiction, alcoholism or a chronic illness, the ripple effect devastates each member of the family. Dr. Dan Gottlieb, host of a public radio show said, "I have been doing this show for 22 years and I cannot remember being so touched by a family's story." www.speakingaboutdepression.com

Second Acts That Change Lives: Making a Difference in the World

Join Jacqueline Foreman and her guest author Mary Beth Sammons as they discuss her book Second Acts That Change Lives: Making a Difference in the World. Are you realizing that the first half of your life is over and you’ve been so busy concentrating on building a career or raising a family, or both, it has suddenly dawned on you that you may have lost yourself in the process and that the dreams you had when you were younger were set aside for more immediate concerns? Or are you frustrated that you have not had the time to truly give back? Mary Beth Sammons offers readers a chance to change all that in Second Acts That Change Lives. The book offers a collection of honest and inspiring stories delving into the lives of a community of mid-life trailblazers who wanted to make changes in their lives and found that as they reached inward for the strength to change, almost unanimously reached out to share their better self, their skills, their talents to make the world a better place. Second Acts That Change Lives is a wake-up call, an intervention of sorts to help prod readers to pursue their dreams—to turn the “someday I’d love to” into “today I will” and, by doing so, make a profound difference in the world.
