Please Join us this episode for our interview with street poet, journalist, and activist Monte Smith!Monte Smith is an internationally acclaimed Street Poet, Rap Journalist, Community Based Educator and Anti-Racist Activist from Winston Salem NC. He has been described as “a fire-brand… a true revolutionary, I mean raw!” by Bruce George, co-creator of HBO’S Def Poetry Jam. Elemental Magazine wrote “Poetry abounds in Hip Hop, but rarely does an individual’s work transcend the elements and conventions with a such a gripping emotional and political style.” More impressive is what UK’s Hip Hop/Jazz group US 3 had to say “If you drew a line from The Watts Prophets through Gill Scott Heron and Public Enemy to Dead Prez, uncompromising wordsmith Monte Smith would be the latest addition to the club. Listen up!” No wonder the Legendary Chuck D of Public Enemy picked Monte’s poem ‘The Deal is Done’ to record for the audio version of The Bandana Republic: A Literary Anthology by Gang Members and Their Affiliates. Fighting Injustice Thru Activism & Organization!

Many forms of social justice plague the US as well as the broader world we live in. Police brutality, institutional racism, imperialism, and war mongering are but a few of the prevalent miscarriages of power. Oftentimes it is few, with concentrated power, who create and sustain the unnecessary suffering upon many. However, the true power is within the "sleeping giant" of the critical masses. When well organized we have seen the fall of evil such as the racist white minority ruled South African government in the early 1990s. The examples of the effectiveness of strong mobilization and organization are well documented. How do we build upon the strong work of individuals and organizations, as a means to tear down injustice? This Sunday (June 7, 2009) we have/had the pleasure to interview community activist and organizer Mr. Larry Hales. Larry Hales is a 32 year-old African American activist and writer. He is a national organizer for the anti-imperialist youth group Fight Imperialism Stand Together and a contributing editor to Workers World Newspaper. Hales is a dedicated activist, who has helped organize many mobilizations for a myriad of issues, including against the war, against racism and police brutality and has spoken at conferences on racism, activism, art and culture. He has also been a victim of police brutality, where at least ten police and parole officers burst into his home, assaulted him and arrested him. Through a national campaign, the charges against him were dropped. Larry has traveled throughout the world to stand in solidarity with oppressed peoples and to help them fight injustice.
