What is “the summer slide”

The “summer slide” occurs when students lose some of the math and reading skills that they gained during the school year.

For many schools across the country, the year is over, thoughts of summer fun fill the minds of students and parents alike. After all, who wouldn’t look forward to beautiful weather and the promise of relaxation, vacations and fun?

Summer learning loss, or summer slide, has implications that go beyond report cards, test scores and letter grades. Once a student is struggling or behind, they can lose confidence not only in school but also in other areas of life.

Join the Young Media Critics on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, 5 p.m.  as they discuss in details 100 days of summer and ways to prevent "the summer slide"
