    C. L. Freire will appear on Renee's Book Talk to discuss her novel, DAVID THORNE: The Golithian Orbs, an edgy, tween fantasy about a boy's desperate fight to save the life of the first friend he has ever had...a man charged with murder. She will also be discussing TREI Literary, the online magazine for writers, for which she is Editor-in-Chief.

    C. L. has used her MySpace page and blog, countless networking sites around the web, and subsequent interviews on Blog Talk Radio to turn her debut novel into a marketing phenomenon. Pre-Orders for DAVID THORNE: The Golithian Orbs were launched on the night of June 30th, during another broadcast appearance on Blog Talk Radio. The book will officially be released on October 1st.

    C. L. has been writing since the age of thirteen, and, in her late teens, threw herself into writing scenes and short stories. Five years ago, she set out on writing her eight-part fantasy series. Now, before her first novel hits the market, some have already called her the next J. K. Rowling. C. L. says that writing is a mind bending obsession, and as all writers, dreams of being on the NY Times Best Sellers List.  She currently has the first two novels in the series completed, and is hard at work on the third, in addition to running TREI Literary Magazine.

She has been quoted on Myspace as saying, "Give me the atmosphere of a dark city street, where the subtle noises that hang in the air remind me that I'm part of the world."

    RENEE’S REVIEW

    Tremolo-cry of the loon
    by Aaron Paul Lazar

“In this coming-of-age mystery set in the Belgrade Lakes region of Main, young Gus LeGarde witnesses a girl being chased through the foggy Maine woods. She’s scared. She’s hurt. And she disappears. “

This story brought back happy memories of childhood fun. Gus is a typical preteen, but also selfless and brave. As a prequel to the LeGarde Mysteries it sets the scene for the future, and Gus’s foray into the world of solving mysteries. It was a fun and yet scary romp back to a time many will relate to. It took me back to my favorite series, the Nancy Drew mysteries and a time in life that was both exciting and world changing. This is a nostalgic and entertaining read.

    RENEE’S REVIEW

    DESIGN by G. Lloyd Helm

“Javi Holis, eldest son of a successful family of tapestry makers, joins a group of religious recluses. He discovers powers hidden in a collection of Mandala designs and spends his life learning how to use them in the service of the god called the Maker of all. When a technologically superior galactic empire invades the world and the invaders are considered gods, and life for Javi and all inhabitants changes dramatically. The empire pacifies Archlea, unwittingly dispersing belief in “The Design” throughout the empire where that belief then flourishes. After six hundred years, the Empire of the Kadeki “gods” is collapsing. An Archlean fair witness (notary public) goes to the slave auctions to buy a house slave and is manipulated into buying a particular slave. He has come to protect and preserve a book of Mandalai hidden by Javi Holis before his death. This is the Book of Design and it must be preserved at all costs.”

    G. Lloyd Helm has written an epic tale. Is fate the master of our destiny or do our choices make the difference.  This book explores the question of a Master of Design for all of creation and the perseverance of religion despite the efforts to stamp it out. For Science Fiction fans it is an interesting quest with a unique concept.  The characters are simple but powerful individuals who hold to their beliefs and overcome technology, machinery and their own fears to triumph over invaders intent on their destruction. A very good read!

If you love reading you will enjoy meeting Judith Woolcock Colombo author of Night Crimes.

According to her biography “Judith was born and raised on the island of Jamaica. She came to America in 1969 in order to attend Fordham University. Night Crimes is Ms. Colombo’s second published novel. Her first novel, The Fablesinger was published in 1989 by The Crossing Press. She is currently working on a new novel.

The author has worked as an adjunct English Instructor in several New York City colleges for over twenty years. In 2000, she and her husband Vincent, a retired NYPD. Sergeant of Detectives, moved from Park Slope, Brooklyn to rural upstate New York.”

Most people who travel the New York City subways have moments of paranoia. We squeeze ourselves into a narrow space between two robust fellow travelers and then feel threatened when someone’s hand accidently brushes against our thigh. We are convinced that everyone is looking at us strangely, or perhaps it’s just that man in the red shirt who dared to smiles at us. This suspicion of our fellow riders is the normal groundless fear that accompanies us on our daily journeys. Lara Bello, a Jamaican-American artist, has been having these feelings lately. She is convinced that someone is following her, watching her every move. But no one believes her, not even her loving husband. Police Sergeant Tony Bello. Why should he? There is no reason why someone should want to follow an art instructor. This is the argument Lara uses to convince herself while riding the subway that the feelings she’s experiencing are normal paranoia.

At the same time Lara’s husband is also caught up in his own mystery. Someone is poisoning derelicts and leaving their bodies for him and the bicycle squad to find. These two separate events begin the world of Night Crimes.

Judith weaves her characters into a complex tale of murder, obsession and duplicity.

We can all recall having those feelings of paranoia. So join us for a discussion about Night Crimes, mysteries, and the process of writing and publication with Judith Woolcock Colombo!

    RENEE’S REVIEW

NIGHT CRIMES by Judith Woolcock Colombo

“Lara is being persistently pursued by a man in a blue baseball cap and Lara’s husband is immersed in his own mystery – the poisoning deaths of derelicts.  These two distinct scenarios begin the world of Night Crimes. The plot is intricate and riveting, weaving a complex tale of murder, obsession, and duplicity.”

Judith Woolcock Colombo has given us a tale “Night Crimes” that keeps the reader turning the pages. I was enthralled with the story, impressed with the characters and thrilled to have found such a gifted author. As an avid reader, and partial to mysteries I found this one intriguing. Judith Woolcock Colombo is a master story teller with characters that are believable and real and a mystery you’ll enjoy! This is a great read!
