The current promotional effort in support of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's autobiography illustrates the uneven reality of the business of selling and promoting books. Her publisher, with a quite reasonable expectation of selling millions of copies in multiple editions, has created a literary juggernaut across multiple continents, lasting weeks into this summer. But most book promotional campaigns are quite modest by comparison, especially for small to midsize imprints, dealing in special interest areas like nonfiction, history, and military matters. Nevertheless, publicists for such publishers have been developing innovative strategies, using new tools like social media, to provide their authors and books with a chance to reach the readers who crave the kinds of reading experiences they are providing.
To learn more about these innovative publicists and their promotional strategies, join author, journalist and internet radio guest host John D. Gresham (@greshamj01) for Writesream Tuesday. His guest this week will be the publicist for Zenith Books (@Zenith_Books) and Motorbooks (@Motorbooksinc), Nichole Schiele (@NicholeSchiele), which specialize in military, aviation, space, and other specialty technical titles. Together they will discuss the new approaches to publicizing books from small to midsize publishers, along with how the publicity playing field is rapidly leveling things to new Internet applications and tools. Listeners are encouraged to call in and offer questions and opinions, in what will be a lively hour of discussion about the state of the publishing industry today.
