Luna will be in sharp focus this year as the US experiences a total eclipse and 5 teams try to land on the Moon. On August 21, citizens in the US from California to the Carolinas will be able to see a total solar eclipse for the first time since 1979. If that isn't cause enough for full Moon madness, five international teams will also be trying to fly to the Moon this year in an attempt to claim the Google Lunar X Prize worth $20 million. Of course, it could cost nearly that much to try to build and fly a robotic rover to the Moon. Worse is the December 31, 2017 deadline set by Google to claim the prize. So, it's anybody's guess whether any of these modern day lunatics will succeed.
