Welcome to WordSmitten and this edition of About the Books. Colleen Barrett, recognized by Fortune Magazine for their America’s Most Powerful Business Women award in 2001, and by Travel Agent Magazine for their Most Powerful Women in Travel award (several years running), appears on About the Books this week.

Barrett will discuss her life as a leader and her recent business book, published by Financial Times (FTPress/Pearson/Penguin). She co-authored and wrote with Ken Blanchard a memoir, and business book, about her leadership of an airline that became known for its maverick approach to affordable pricing, personal service, and profits.

In an industry (can anyone say “tarmac tirade”) that is known for treating people as if they were simply an alphanumeric annoyance, Southwest stood above the electronic booking crowds and announced, “We’ll call you back if we’re busy.” And they did.

Barrett’s book title, which reflects her philosophy and the stock symbol (LUV) for Southwest Airlines, is “Lead with LUV.” We have selected Colleen Barrett for this month’s interview because, for the 2012 National Women’s History Month, she is a champion of the ideas from www.nwhp.org for this year’s theme of Women’s Education – Women’s Empowerment.
