Often when we tend to think of slavery, at least here in the U. S., our minds are catapulted to pictures of African slaves and their perilous journey to the New World on the Middle Passage. We've seen movies like Roots, 12 Years a Slave, articles, and books that depict this curious institution. In my mind, I can hear an old negro spiritual entitled, "No More Auction Block for Me", a haunting melody of dark times in the U. S.
Dark times that are still very much present today.
This type of slavery involves boys and girl, young men and women. Just like in times past, they are stolen or coerced or deceived into the trade. The auction block isn't a phyiscal foundation but one that is still tangible. From the highest bidder to the most convenient bidder, they are put on display for sale. It can be $8,000 or $8.00, whoever has the money. Statistics show that human trafficking generates 9.5 billion dollars yearly in the U. S. The numbers get worse from there.
But let's be absolutely clear: humans are not for sale.
