Winning the War on Voters: Will Institutional Mismanagement Quash Turnout Gains?

In today's Wilshire & Washington, is it really all about the kids? Campaigns are focusing huge resources on turning out the youth vote, but this segment of the population always lags behind in voter percentages. Will this year be any different? And will all the negative campaigning turn off first-time young voters? Ted, Teresa, and Maegan also confront the big issue of Obama's attack ads: will they tarnish his image in a campaign already beset with negativity? And does anyone even care about Yard-Sign-Gate (apparently, nobody can get their hands on Obama yard signs, so supporters are going it alone and printing the signs themselves) and do yard signs even have an impact? Also, did the Governator just admit to toking up with Chong, and does it even matter anyway, hearing about politicians breaking the law?

  • Original Air Date:

Can Saving the Economy Save Us From Spurious Sarah News?

So, sorry, Ms. Palin, but something happened on Wall Street to bump you off the front page. A little major market crash, that's all. Now, the candidates are scrambling to respond to Black Monday and the financial crisis; who's up to snuff on their economic policy? Hosts Ted, Maegan, and Teresa wonder if this help the campaigns concentrate on the issues and move beyond the personality attacks? (Magic Eight Ball says, "Not if Steve Schmidt has anything to say about it.") Enough of that; back to Palin. How about Sarah's interview with Charlie Gibson? Did Gibson - sorry, "Charlie" - remind you just a little of Professor Snape? Was he trying to mend past journalistic sins on his part? Was the whole pop-quiz nature of the interview condescending and how will Katie Couric's interview differ? Will Tina Fey's staggeringly good impression of Palin on SNL bring the media back to its senses in covering the VP choice, like SNL did with the Democratic primaries? And what is it about Barbara Streisand that just drives conservatives nuts?

  • Original Air Date:

Joe vs Sarah the (Unlicensed) Barracuda? And yes, Ted got arrested...

So, um, lipstick? Yes, lipstick is the main story of the day; but why? Is it sexist? Is it a diversion? Is it just... lipstick? In today's Wilshire & Washington, hosts Ted, Teresa, and Maegan take on the overflowing Palin-spectacular, and ponder other important questions of the day: Can Biden take Palin in a hand-to-hand combat? What's Steve Schmidt's problem, saying the media needs to provide proper "deference" to the Republican VP pick? Does Maegan McCain's claim that her family "understands" war make her fair game? Where do we draw the line with families? And how did Obama do on the No Spin Zone? Ted also addresses the unfortunate circumstances in St. Paul, where he was covering a protest for Variety and got arrested and held for four hours by the police despite being, you know, his right as an accredited journalist to be there.

  • Original Air Date:

    Wilshire & Washington

The DNC's gone the way of the dodo, but the RNC has turned up the heat with scandal, moose, and teen-preggers. Sarah Palin's nomination has ignited a flame in the media, but is it a good thing for the Republican nominee? Why is it that all the big stories about Palin are being broke by the bloggers and is the McCain campaign overreacting over the media's coverage of her vetting process? Today, Ted Johnson also reports live from St. Paul on the Republican National Convention (how does it feel, Ted?), and Teresa and Maegan weigh in on the (anti) feminist angles of the media coverage on the GOP's VP nomination. Is it fair? Is it sexist? Is it sexy? (Yes?) They also ask the question - are conventions even necessary? - and, don't worry, they have answers!
