I am doing my best to understand the angst that exists within segments of the black community. I understand that racism is real and still a part of very many institutions in this country. I myself have been a victim of racism. Suffice it to say I have not gotten a job that I believe I deserved due to the "good old boy (girl)" system that is alive and well in the school system I worked in for a number of years. I have suffered snide comments from strangers when out on a date with someone the the racists did not think I should be with. I nearly got into a fistfight with a 6-4 240-pound redneck construction worker because he did not think I should be having a beer in “his” bar. Even though he did not live in the town, where that bar was located. I remember being 13 years old and have my hand burned by the cigarette of a Tampa police officer. I was accused of stealing contact lens cleaner. I had been wearing glasses since I was eight. So many chances to be angry. I still see Black people suffering under the weight of institutional racism but I have a different approach to solving that problem.
Racism is a negative spirit that feeds on more hate and division. Racism looks to divide people. Racism looks to inspire hate. Racism is built up with terse rhetoric and distrust. Racism enjoys as a delicacy anger and ignorance. I will not feed the hellish beast of racism. I will give place to evil that comes from the infectious bite of the beast, racism. I will commit my life to love.
Love is also a spirit. Love is a spirit that feeds upon mutual respect. Loves dines and grows strong on kind words. Love drinks the sweet new wine of peace and understanding. I will strive cover my world and those in it with love.
