Setting educational goals early in life is key!

Early education is a hot topic in the presidential race of 2008. Most candidates agree with the importance of investing in early childhood but could we please define where early education begins? The politicians seem to buy into early education beginning at four years of age - at least that is where they propose to begin universal funding.

Anyone following brain research in the last ten years would know that from birth until about age 3, the brain develops faster than at any other time, laying down a sketchy blueprint for how we feel, think and behave. Parts of that blueprint will last forever. It is also clear that baby and toddler experiences help "turn on" parts of the brain, as well as activate many genes. Even more important we know that you need to use it or you'll lose it! Therefore, is waiting until a child turns four years old acceptable?

Furthermore, it has been proven that the academic culture of a home learning environment has been shown to be more influential than either income level or the educational level of parents. Bottom line: Parents have the most potential to make a difference in the education and life of their children! Are we making enough early personal sacrifices for educational excellence in our children?

The New Year welcomes resolutions - mine will be to emphasize that early education is the key, which means before you meet the preschool or kindergarten teacher, a conscious plan should be implemented to stimulate your little one's brain toward developing an increased number of connections in stronger ways. When someone says to me, "I am amazed at your child's abilities," I always say, "it is all about the personal investments we have chosen to make in his life."

You cannot afford to wait for perfect conditions, availability of resources or more time. Opportunities for success are easily lost while waiting for the conditions to be just right. I encourage you to set your goals for the future of your family today - no matter your conditions! Yogi Berra always said, "If you don't know where you're going, you'll end up somewhere else." Happy New Year and may all your goals be met!
