PEAS IN THEIR PODS

Laurell Hall will be our guest Sunday 7pm central. Please come support this mother. May 9, 1994 started off like any ordinary day. Eighteen year old Cleashindra Hall-Clea to her friends and family, left her home for her clerical job with Dr. Larry Amos, a dentist in Pine Bluff, AR. At around 8:00, Clea called her mother to check in. It was the last time Laurell Hall would ever hear from her daughter.

"Who you calling old?!"

Imagine how different things would be if aging was no longer an issue in the lives of women and men at any age. What would life be like if women and men were free to be who they were born to be if age was a non-issue. M. Cecile Forté, Ph.D., explores issues of age and aging in our youth driven society. Like most Baby Boomers, Cecile’s not “…going gently into that good night!” An author, researcher and national motivational speaker, Cecile uses her expertise in this arena which provided the basis for her one woman show, “Who you calling old?!”

In Grace Zolla Protano's touching memoir As Long As You Can See the Clock, You're Okay she takes us back to a vibrant Brooklyn in the 1950's, a time when the country liked Ike and Baby Boomers were growing up and listening to the new sound of rock and roll. Yet for Grace her childhood memories include living with a mother with bipolar disorder. Unfortunately even with all the hope and prosperity of the times, it was a generation where bipolar disorder wasn't a term used in public or private. Unlike today's generation that talks openly about mental illness and its treatment, such things remained behind closed doors. This book is Grace's way of making peace with the past. The book is funny; the book is sad and ultimately it's a kind of apology for not understanding. Long Island has been Grace's home for thirty-five years. Her experiences with teaching teenagers for most of that time, raising three teenage daughters, and being a teenager herself in Brooklyn, provide a look into the heart of a kid with its conflicts, its sadness, and its unbridled silliness.

Talking with Janet White Author of Secrets of the Hidden Job Market

Before Janet White was laid off from her corporate public relations job, the sales director for a national business magazine tried to convince her that her firm needed to advertise in his magazine and participate in an event his magazine was sponsoring. She told him why they didn’t and that there was nothing in his hard-sell presentation that related to her company. She went on to tell him how he could have easily qualified her company and tailored his presentation to meet her needs. Shortly after that, he called her and said, "I am prepared to offer you a senior position on my staff. I know sales talent when I see it, and you could get into any senior corporate executive’s office in this country." Janet turned down his offer, but he hit on something. Ever since she started working in the early 1970’s, she'd gotten every job she'd ever wanted – and it didn’t matter if she didn’t have any experience, didn’t know anyone on the inside, how big the company was, how much competition there was or what the economy was doing. None of those things mattered. The difference was she was thinking differently, and that started early. Her book Secrets of the Hidden Job Market will help you realize why you’ve been having problems getting hired, and teach you a revolutionary approach that is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before. Once you read this book, you’ll never look for a job the same way again because when you change your thinking, you change your life.
