All things jewelry and the art of metalsmithing. This is and has been a passion of mine for some time. I have served as the head jewelery instructor at the University of California, San Diego, Crafts Center for 2 plus decades, and also am the owner/operator of Whaley Studios in the Hillcrest District of San Diego. During our program, my intention is to feature artists in the craft and discuss, educate, problem solve and entertain callers while we consider topics of interest in the metalsmith and jewelry making trades.

    Metalsmith BenchTalk with Kate McKinnon

On the November 19th program, I am excited to speak with metalsmith, author, and 'defender of the little guy' Kate McKinnon. Kate is the author of 'Structural Metal Clay', a book for anyone interested in making serious work from fine silver metal clay. It might sound expensive at $48 (DISCOUNTED TO $30), but it's less than half the price of a half day class, and shows you clearly and concisely how to make a whole series of basic jewelry components, 3-D forms, and introduces concepts like resin fills and fine silver fusing. Make clasps, rings, mechanisms, embedded rivets, bails, and beautiful handmade chain, all in pure fine silver. Learn the reasons for full annealing and proper firing, how to do patina, and how to make jewelry in this beautiful metal that stands the test of time. This book also includes a sampling of simple metalsmithing techniques that anyone can master, with or without a professional setup, and shows you how to work safely and cleanly in your home studio. For more information visit, Kate's website at: http://www.katemckinnon.com. Please join us for what should be a fun and informative conversation.

    Metalsmith BenchTalk with John Rose

On the November 12th program, I am delighted to speak John Rose of '2-Roses' Fame. 2 Roses is a life long collaboration between Corliss Rose and John Lemieux Rose. Each is a master craftsman in their own right, and together they encompass a formidable range of expertise across a wide range of mediums. Both are the product of formal artistic training in the U.S and abroad. Curiosity and evolution have been the driving forces of the studio since its inception in 1968. In addition to art jewelry, some of the major mediums the studio produces work for are commercial and industrial design, tool and die making, painting, photography, lithography, sculpture, holography, furniture, fabrics, engineered plastics, leatherwork, ceramics, lapidary and gem cutting. The studio continues to evolve as the couple's interests shift and cross-pollinate from one medium to another. In 2005 the studio began formally exploring the creative process collaborating with a wide variety of artists and individuals from other disciplines, mediums and industries. Metalsmith BenchTalk with Andrew Cooperman

On the Thursday, November 5th program, my guest is metalsmith, writer, and teacher Andrew Cooperman, of Cooperman Jewelry (see profile at: http://coopermanjewelry.com/profile.php). Andy's bio reads: 'I have considered myself a metalsmith since 1980. It was in the late 70's, as an English major in college, that I first encountered the field—outside of the jewelry and hollowware that I had seen in shops and stores. There was a class room in the art building (I spent a lot of time in the art building drawing and painting) that seemed to hold some sort of focused excitement for those who were working inside. There was fire and small, strangely specific tools. The ringing of hammers, I think, was the sound that forced me to open the doors. The fact that metal could be sawn, formed and—especially—forged in a relatively non-industrial place came as a surprise to me. And when I saw that it could be approached in ways that made it look unlike metal, that small almost animate things could be made with it, I was hooked. With a second major in Studio Art, I built a small back bedroom studio, spent some time exploring the very similar field of dental crown and bridge manufacture and worked at the bench in several jewelry stores. In 1984, I followed my wife Kim to Seattle, Washington. We have been here ever since." Please join us for what promises to be a very special program with Andrew!
