Nobel Committee has recognized lesser-known and quieter voices who have served humanity – those heroic individuals and groups often working quietly in their small corner on a more humble scale, yet improving the life of many people and with universal application for us all. Such people have included Rigoberta Tum of Guatemala, Aung San SuNu Kyi of Burma and Mairead Corrigan-Maguire of Ireland.
The singular common thread in all of these awards since 1901 has been not only the rewarding and recognition of unusual and distinguished human achievement, but the enabling and promoting of even greater human benefit in the future with the continuing and expanding of that achievement.
The Reverend Kevin Daniel Annett is long overdue for such recognition. Just what has Kevin Annett achieved and what is the continuing purpose of his life and work? Because of his revelation of horrendous crimes against indigenous people not only in his own country but on this Continent, and his courageous refusal to remain silent, he has devoted his life to changing governments and institutions which have adamantly resisted such change. At enormous personal cost and deprivation over two decades, Kevin Annett has challenged the establishment of religious organizations that have reviled and persecuted him and the national government of his own country, Canada, which, while slowly and reluctantly bending to the pressure he has influenced, continues to avoid acknowledging him or his work.
