There was a time in University where a professor would say to a student, “I say this.”, and the student was expected to research, reason, and return with a well thought out response to that statement, pro or con. The student did not know the stance of the Professor on that statement and it made no difference, for it was the students reasoning and if necessary, the ability to defend his position that mattered, that he had come to some conclusions on his own- not to give what he thought the Professor wanted to hear. If he committed errors in reasoning, assumed something to be true, or based his argument in ‘faith’, ‘trust’ or ‘hope’ his argument was quickly exposed for those failings; and he learned from that failure how to think, not what to think.
