Toni Bernhard got sick in 2001 and has yet to recover. She was a law professor for 22 years but, due to the illness, now had to retire. Faced with learning to live a new life she began to write a manual for herself, both guide her through the tough times and to remind herself of joy. This soon turned into the award-winning book, How to Be Sick: A Buddhist-Inspired Guide for the Chronically Ill and Their Caregivers. This has changed people's lives as they've learned to live a life of joy despite their health challenges. Her new book is How to Wake Up: A Buddhist-Inspired Guide to Navigating Joy and Sorrow. Discover how she says we can all wake up to what it means to be human – both its stark realities and the potential it holds for us to find peace and contentment. When we’re fully present for our life as it is, whether it’s pleasant or unpleasant, in this very moment we have the potential to awaken to a deeper awareness.
