Join me for the return of The Vibe Cafe as Laura Johnston Kohl stops by the Cafe to talk about her experience with the Peoples Temple, the Jonestown Tragedy and her new book! Laura Kohl was a member of the Peoples Temple. She followed the Rev. Jim Jones from San Francisco to the jungles of Guyana. She worked long days and nights growing and harvesting crops, making soap and ordering supplies to help build and maintain what she saw as an egalitarian commune moving toward self-sufficiency. She happened to be in Georgetown, the capital of Guyana, on church business in November 1978, when Jonestown imploded in the mass murder-suicides of Jones and 900 followers. Today, Kohl lives in San Marcos. She is a practicing Quaker and has been an elementary-school teacher for 15 years.
