5 Key Steps to Children Making Better Grades!

5 quick steps to your child making better grades!

I recently joined a literacy center in the community of Missouri City, (Houston) Texas. Anyone who knows me knows that my passion is helping children and young adults to read and comprehend what they are reading in order for them to succeed in education.

I noticed and observed the educational teachings of L. Ron Hubbard and saw that they paralleled with what I was doing as a GED teacher of young adults and my two summers of teaching first and second graders for two summers. Those were some of the most gratifying days of my life. Seeing the light of understanding gleam in a child’s eyes is like no other experience in life. The pride, self-esteem, and confidence are things that for the rest of their lives, no one can ever take away.

There are three barriers to learning: (L. Ron Hubbard)

    ·        The desire to do it.

    ·        Not learning step-by-step how to learn it.

    ·        The miss-understood word.

Five quick steps to your child making better grades.

    1.     Have an example of the things the child is trying to learn.

    2.     The child learns best by participating. If you are teaching them about cookies, pull out a roll of cookies and bake it with them while they are learning. This way you can demonstrate how to bake them and the child can see, touch, taste, smell, and feel the object being studied. You can teach math also by the number of cookies and measurement. Too many times we are taught without hands on experience.

    3.     When reading with your child (At least 25 pages a day) make sure the child knows what every word means. By skipping words the child does not understand, believe or not learning stops at that misunderstood word. It messes up the understanding of every other word. Memory ceases at that point.

    4.     Learn it step-by-step.  You would not put you child on a bike if they never learned how to ride and say go at it, would you. (I hope not) You first would show the child by letting them watch you ride, then you would explain how to keep your balance, what the pedals do, how to stop, how to guide the handle bars, and moving your legs and feet in order for the bike to move, them getting on the bike and you walking with them helping with their balance as they try to ride, building their confidence and skill and so forth. Step-by-step. (Make sure they have a helmet, hand guards and knee and elbow pads. Don’t rough like we used to do. (LOL) I still have scars. (Smile)

    5.     The last thing is have the child demonstrate their understanding of what was learned. Let them make the cookies themselves or watch them ride the bike. Let them show you they understood what was taught. If they can’t, then the teacher needs to start all over step-by-step until it is truly learned.

A couple of other things for middle, high school, and college students, when doing your papers and reading assignments be able to answer the six questions of: Who, What, When, Why, Where, and How. If you can answer these questions you completely understand what was read and your teachers will know that you completely understood what was taught. I promise you an A on every paper if you answer your assignments like this. When reading write in the margin the six questions as you stumble upon them. Parents when you check your student’s homework, ask these questions to see if they truly understand what was read. You can try this with nursery rhyme stories at first to practice. Do Stories like the three bears, the three little pigs, etc.

Remember if you want to learn something you can learn it. Time, effort, and energy always pay huge rewards. Good luck in your learning and remember time invested in yourself is time well spent. Parents I gave my children $20.00 to learn the multiplication table up to twelve. Think about it, Multiplication is the cornerstone of math. It’s a cheap investment for my children to have a solid foundation and a head start on math for the rest of their lives.

Hope this helps and I’ll be posting more helpful learning tips each month. If you want to say thanks, order my books and tell your friends about them.

Happy learning and time you spend with your children can never be replaced. The time you spend with them, will be the time they spend with you when you are older. Time lost can never be replaced.

    God Speed!

    Vincent
