Protecting Our Black Wives, Sisters, and Daughters

    Hot! HOT! H - O - T !

Anyway you wanna sum it up, the Urban Nation Radio segment on the Don Imus controversy last night makes Fahrenheit 911 look like an Alpha Phi Alpha convention being held in Antarctica. The sparks flew quickly and they continued flying all show long as the most dangerous team in radio continued to prove why -- attacking and defending their viewpoints on this issue with the skills that only they can exhibit.

Disregarding the fact that Chill was visibly upset by this controversy and the toll that it's taking on black women the last few day, Big Wes went on the offensive -- asking why are people so concerned about this issue when this is not the first white person to say something about black people. He also states that in his opinion, Imus is "not a racist", and that he also has said things in the past about black people in the past. Chill responds to that by saying that he thinks that black people are the cause of this happening, and that if Imus didn't hear the terms from other black people who use these names, then he wouldn't know what they mean. He then states that he has never heard Big Wes refer to a black woman as a "nappy headed ho".

However, Wes then agrees that if Imus had called Big Wes' daughter a "nappy headed ho", then he would have gotten upset. Chill wondered aloud why our black brothers don't take the same type of protective ownership of all black women when they are insulted, but they even defend the people (Imus) who make these statements. Big Wes then asked Chill if there are some women out there who act like "bitches and hos". Chill said he agrees that there are but that doesn't mean we can indiscriminately allow anyone to make blanket statements about women who may or may not dress or look the part. Wes agreed.

Chill then states that white people have to learn that there is a past history that should be taken into consideration when dealing with these issues. Wes says this is like black people calling each other "nigger"...huh? Is he saying the word means exactly the same no matter what the source. Wes agrees that he would get more upset if a white man called him nigger than if a black guy would (after trying to deny it initially). Long silence.

Ev then asks why black people only discuss these things when white people use these words. "EXACTLY!" Wes says! What??? Did someone just wake Big Wes up? We've already discussed that the problem lies with both blacks and whites, right??? Perhaps it's just the way Ev Luv phrased it....that's why he is who he is. Then Wes says he never said what Imus did wasn't wrong....No Wes, but you did say it shouldn't be an issue, because we've all done it at some point. Hmmmm.

Ev then disagrees with Wes and says he thinks Imus IS racist, due to his history of doing these types of things. K-Chill recaps the statements by Imus on the air. Wes chuckles upon hearing them. Wes is a cold, cold individual peeps. He then starts in on the behavior of young kids today and how since they are "having oral sex in schools" and "dressing scantily in clubs" black women deserve the names they are being called. He then asks Chill what he will say when he sees a girl dressed "scantily".

Chill says that dressing scantily in clubs should have nothing to do with women who wear jerseys and play basketball. Ev reiterates that we need to lead by example. Chill agrees. Wes says we need to stand up as a people and march against use of the "N" word. Chill is skeptical that any blacks would show up. These guys are hilarious. Ev Luv thinks we should march against Rev. Al Sharpton. SHARPTON!!! Chill asks why, and Ev thinks it's because he's not teaching the black people correctly. When did anyone anoint Al Sharpton the teacher of Black America?

Wes thinks it needs to start with the artists who make the records containing that language. Chill thinks we need to be marching against the mega-companies who distribute the music. Ev wants to boycott BET. Chill is skeptical, but wonders why black and white girls who dress the same don't get the same reaction. Big Wes and Ev Luv disagree that they don't get the same reaction. Big Wes says your clothes define who you are. Chill STRONGLY disagrees. Perhaps a bit too strongly....maybe somebody needs to remind these guys that they're all friends.

Ev then compares clown in costumes to hos in short skirts. Chill says that he's not playing holier than thou, but that this situation seems to have served as more of a wakeup call for him than maybe anyone else. Wes get chippy at that and says that Chill is trying to position himself as being the winner of the discussion, and him as the wrong one. Does Wes know that there is no right and wrong side in talk radio? Apparently not, but whenever you hear his famous phrase "...for you to sit there and say..." you know the mierda has hit the fan. Does he expect Chill to stand up during the entire radio show, or what?

Ev defends Wes and says if you wanna be taken seriously put a suit on. Chill wants to know what should be done about the millions of black women who walk around all day in clothes other than suits. Chill decides to take the topic away from clothing and back to Imus. Then Ev agrees that this has nothing to do with clothing after all. Chill says that as long as people attach the word "ho" to women who it doesn't apply to, it should be erased from use.

Then everyone gets their two minutes to summarize their thoughts on the subject. Wes agrees that this need to stop, period....BUT you also need to kill the negative images. Ev Luv then says that Imus was wrong, and we need to show him as a people that we no longer act or dress like that. If we want to be taken seriously we need to look serious. Life is Life. Wow, Ev that was profound. Then Wes is kind enough to give Chill an intro -- he seems kinda upset that Chill will have the last word. Write your congressman, Wes.

Chill ends the show by taking about the show Roots and draws a parallel to the social classes of those days to the classes of today, to show that this Imus issue became hot because as far as class is concerned, not much has actually changed since then. On second thought, Chill may not know what the heck he is talking about! Ev suggests he reads a book about black rednecks. Huh? This from the man who once said the famous line, "He only knows the capital of Ethiopia because he reads all the time?" Who knew Ev was now a book expert?

    We're out. Peace.
