Two UnionCounty Football teams made it all the way to the state semifinals. In the 4A Class, Porter Ridge made it three straight trips to the state semis as they were matched up against North Davidson. Monroe, in the Class 1AA, made the long drive up to Bryson City to play against Swain County in the 1AA state semi.
