Hi, I wanted to say thank you for listening to my show. Also, I love the concept you have about being "tunedin" and what that means and looks like. What a great way to ignite the seeds. Linda;)

Get The Scoop

“It’s simply about a very special lady.” It was a line that started a very cool moment. As the program director of Z104, I was fortunate to help book some of the biggest artists and performers to play inside the Z104 Lounge. The Lounge was a forum we created for popular and up-and-coming artists to play for a small group of listeners who won their way inside through the station. In addition to playing their most popular songs acoustically, they would also answer questions from the station deejays and the audience. This intimate setting of around 100 people gave the artist an opportunity to talk about their passions, why they wrote the songs, squash bad gossip and more. It was a unique forum and a one-of-a-kind experience to see live music. One of the most exciting Lounges for me happened when I booked Lenny Kravitz to perform for the station. I accomplished a few goals with this event. First, when I told my superiors that I would be requesting it, no one believed it could really happen. Lenny is big! But, you never know until you ask, so I did. I pitched the record label and his management on the benefits of playing in this type of forum and they tuned in, thank goodness, and it happened! The second exciting moment happened on the actual day of the Lounge. It was truly a memorable event. From the moment Lenny came in to the dimly lighted room in Washington, DC that was covered with famous paintings and an air of royalty, it was just him and a guitar. He sat down on a stool and went into "Can't Get You Off Of My Mind" and had the room frozen within seconds. We all had chills, but little did we know of an even bigger surprise that was coming to put us over the top. It was imperative that our personalities come prepared so the artist would be comfortable during the Lounge. We would always focus on how you look, how you sound, and what you say. They would study the artist and try to write questions that were compelling and interesting, not just the standard boilerplate stuff. Our hope was to create enough of a comfort level that the artist would open up and provide something that no one had ever heard before that interview and/or performance. At the time, Lenny was promoting his "Baptism" CD which featured a very popular song called, “Lady.” We had all read the tabloids who had reported that he and Nicole Kidman had a fling earlier in the year, and because of the nature of the content in this song, our crew hoped he may discuss it. Again, you never know unless you ask. But, thanks to the way the question was asked by our persoanlity and the rapport he had built with Lenny up to that point, we got more than we ever imagined. The Z104 deejay said, “We know the song "Lady" is about a love interest or love affair but I’m curious about what your inspiration was for the song; relationships in general, the feeling you have when there’s a crush, or the general excitement of being in love?” Lenny says, “It’s simply about a very special lady.” But when the deejay stayed in the moment by being very curious and interested in the topic. He pushed a little further until Lenny says, “Do you want to know who it’s about?” Of course everyone wanted to know. So Lenny said, “Fuck it! It’s about Nicole!” GASP! We knew about the fling but until that moment I don’t think anyone knew he had written a hit song about her! What a gigantic scoop for the station! The deejay was perfect. He was curious, interested, prepared and gave Lenny a comfort level to reveal a big secret for everyone. It was truly a special moment. I was reminded of it today when I read an article on CNN.com Lenny Kravitz mum on Kidman mystery The article mentions that while Kravitz may be focused on the world, tabloids have been zeroing in on his love life. Earlier this month, former girlfriend Nicole Kidman told Vanity Fair that she was engaged briefly before marrying Keith Urban, but refused to name her fiance. When asked whether he was the mystery man, Kravitz replied: "I keep that to myself. I feel like that is private and it's between the two of us, so I just leave it there." Maybe the reporter could have been more Tuned In to him and walked away with a big scoop too. The key to getting Tuned In to your conversations is through rapport building. Neuro-Linguistic Programming for Dummies recommends the following: Take a genuine interest in getting to know what's important to the other person. Pick up on the key words, favorite phrases and a way of speaking that someone uses and build these subtly into your own conversation. Notice how someone likes to handle information. Do they like lots of details or just the big picture? As you speak, feed back information in this same portion size. Breathe in unison with them. Look out for the other person's intention — their underlying aim — rather than what they do or say. They may not always get it right, but expect their heart to lie in the right place. Adopt a similar stance to them in terms of your body language, gestures, voice tone and speed. Respect the other person's time, energy, favourite people and money. They will be important resources for them. You are the message. And you need all parts of you working in harmony: words, pictures, and sounds. If you don't look confident — as if you believe in your message — people will not listen to what you are saying. Rapport involves being able to see eye-to-eye with other people, connecting on their wavelength. So much (93 per cent) of the perception of your sincerity comes not from what you say but how you say it and how you show an appreciation for the other person's thoughts and feelings. Think about listening to your favorite radio station when they announce an interview with a big Hollywood celebrity. You’re excited because you’ve enjoyed the actor in several movies and hear he may be dating one of your favorite actresses and this interview could be the confirmation. But once the interview airs, the personality announces who he is speaking with and says, “What would you like to tell us?” instead of asking any specific questions. You become frustrated and bored with the interview and tune out immediately because you’re not getting the information you really want. The key to better conversations for you is build a good rapport with them and you never know what they might say...it just may surprise you. Lenny Kravitz's upcoming album is titled "It Is Time for a Love Revolution."

The Places You'll Go

"How can you seem so alive with those big bags under your eyes!" My co-worker was obviously not a parent or she would have understood completely. It was my first day back last week after being out to celebrate the delivery of my third son. For those of you that are parents, you can totally understand the "eye bags" look and the feeling of being excited with a newborn in the house. But for me, it was something more.

Yes, I am elated to have another child and it's exciting to have a new baby. But, the part that really gets my juices rolling beyond the obvious stuff is the fact that a life event such as this one breaks the momentum of a normal routine. All of a sudden, I have a new schedule, a different sleep pattern, new responsibilities and so much more! I have been forced to step out of a comfort zone that has been cruising along now for some time and start to do things differently.

It got me to thinking about why it takes a major life event, such as this one, to break an old pattern or set a new routine...? Do you take the same route to work each day, have the same rituals when you get home, stay in the same job, or just continue any pattern because you truly love it? Or is it something that has simply become a default position for you. You've done it for so long that it's a habit you don't even think about that often?

You want to make changes in your work, your money and your life but the idea of stepping away from your comfort zone is just too much to handle right now. Do you ever think, "I hate my job, but I could never leave it!", "I really want to follow my passion, but I would never be successful at it!" or "If I could just (fill in the blank) everything would be different!" I use to secretly wish that someone would come along and push me off the cliff so I would have to follow a new path. There was no way I was jumping on my own! Ever feel that way too?

It reminds me of the Dr. Seuss book, "Oh, The Places You'll Go." And since I have a new kid on my mind, I thought a children's book would be worth sharing today. Go out and play.

Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You're off to Great Places!
You're off and away!

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You're on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go.

You'll look up and down streets. Look 'em over with care.
About some you will say, "I don't choose to go there."
With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet,
you're too smart to go down any not-so-good street.

And you may not find any
you'll want to go down.
In that case, of course,
you'll head straight out of town.

It's opener there
in the wide open air.

Out there things can happen
and frequently do
to people as brainy
and footsy as you.

And when things start to happen,
don't worry. Don't stew.
Just go right along.
You'll start happening too.

OH!
THE PLACES YOU'LL GO!

You'll be on your way up!
You'll be seeing great sights!
You'll join the high fliers
who soar to high heights.

You won't lag behind, because you'll have the speed.
You'll pass the whole gang and you'll soon take the lead.
Wherever you fly, you'll be the best of the best.
Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.

Except when you don' t
Because, sometimes, you won't.

I'm sorry to say so
but, sadly, it's true
and Hang-ups
can happen to you.

You can get all hung up
in a prickle-ly perch.
And your gang will fly on.
You'll be left in a Lurch.

You'll come down from the Lurch
with an unpleasant bump.
And the chances are, then,
that you'll be in a Slump.

And when you're in a Slump,
you're not in for much fun.
Un-slumping yourself
is not easily done.

You will come to a place where the streets are not marked.
Some windows are lighted. But mostly they're darked.
A place you could sprain both you elbow and chin!
Do you dare to stay out? Do you dare to go in?
How much can you lose? How much can you win?

And IF you go in, should you turn left or right...
or right-and-three-quarters? Or, maybe, not quite?
Or go around back and sneak in from behind?
Simple it's not, I'm afraid you will find,
for a mind-maker-upper to make up his mind.

You can get so confused
that you'll start in to race
down long wiggled roads at a break-necking pace
and grind on for miles across weirdish wild space,
headed, I fear, toward a most useless place

The Waiting Place...
...for people just waiting.

Waiting for a train to go
or a bus to come, or a plane to go
or the mail to come, or the rain to go
or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow
or waiting around for a Yes or a No
or waiting for their hair to grow.
Everyone is just waiting.

Waiting for the fish to bite
or waiting for wind to fly a kite
or waiting around for Friday night
or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake
or a pot to boil, or a Better Break
or a sting of pearls, or a pair of pants
or a wig with curls, or Another Chance.
Everyone is just waiting.

NO!
That's not for you!

Somehow you'll escape
all that waiting and staying.
You'll find the bright places
where Boom Bands are playing.

With banner flip-flapping,
once more you'll ride high!
Ready for anything under the sky.
Ready because you're that kind of a guy!

Oh, the places you'll go! There is fun to be done!
There are points to be scored. there are games to be won.
And the magical things you can do with that ball
will make you the winning-est winner of all.
Fame! You'll be famous as famous can be,
with the whole wide world watching you win on TV.

Except when they don't.
Because, sometimes, they won't.

I'm afraid that some times
you'll play lonely games too.
Games you can't win
'cause you'll play against you.

All Alone!
Whether you like it or not,
Alone will be something
you'll be quite a lot.

And when you're alone, there's a very good chance
you'll meet things that scare you right out of your pants.
There are some, down the road between hither and yon,
that can scare you so much you won't want to go on.

But on you will go
though the weather be foul
On you will go
though your enemies prowl
On you will go
though the Hakken-Kraks howl
Onward up many
a frightening creek,
though your arms may get sore
and your sneakers may leak.

On and on you will hike
and I know you'll hike far
and face up to your problems
whatever they are.

You'll get mixed up, of course,
as you already know.
You'll get mixed up
with many strange birds as you go.
So be sure when you step.
Step with care and great tact
and remember that Life's
a Great Balancing Act.
Just never forget to be dexterous and deft.
And never mix up your right foot with your left.

And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed!
(98 and 3 / 4 percent guaranteed.)

KID, YOU'LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!

So...
be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O'Shea,
you're off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So...get on your way!

The Little Ones

"If anyone ever tries to say that to me again, I'll punch them!" It was a bold statement from our owner, Jeff Trumper, as he addressed the managers after one of the worst weeks for our station in quite some time. A week earlier, our biggest station had suddenly gone off-air in the middle of the day and stayed off for five straight days! In the radio business, this is a big deal! Because if you are off-air, you are not airing any content, so listeners have to listen to another station and you cannot air any advertising, which pays the bills. Imagine closing any business for an entire week while someone tries to identify a problem to have it open again. It's an all hands on deck situation.

Our engineers worked around the clock to find the problem. They were looking at every scenerio that may be involved with this type of major failure, but were coming up with deadends for a couple of days. Finally, after consulting with other engineers and searching every possible angle, they found it. It was a tiny transistor that had caused all the problems. A transistor that was not much larger than a pencil eraser. This tiny but critical piece made all the difference. When Mr. Trumper made the statement, he held up the tiny part and said, "No one can ever tell me the small stuff doesn't count, ever again!"

Get Tuned In to what you want to achieve or change today. Is there a small part in you that is holding you back from success? You may really want to start working out, quit smoking, take a new job, be more confident or whatever. But there's a small part in you that continues to push an old behavior, or an emotional response to this new goal that makes you feel a certain way or actually stops you from doing the new thing. The part was created at another moment in time to work for you then, but it is no longer needed to move forward today.

Just as the engineers had to look at every angle to find a solution for our radio station and get us back on-air. You have to become aware of what part in you has continued to act in a way that isn't productive any longer. Start by looking at your goals and what outcome you have in mind. You have to be specific. What is the end result you are hoping to achieve now that you can measure in a realistic time frame? If your goal is just a hope or a wish, like winning a lottery, you will not find the answer. You need a dead-aim on something you can witness in your life.

Once you know the answer, take some time to look inside yourself to become aware of your behavior, emotions and attitude around this goal. What is your "Inner DJ" saying to you about this idea? Imagine you have already achieved this goal and be alert to how you see it, feel it or hear it - what are you feeling? The small part that may be holding you back can be found somewhere inside this exploration.

Is there a feeling you don't belong, or something saying this isn't right? That's the small part talking and you need to address it. Now, dissociate yourself from this part and get Tuned In to what it is saying and doing to help you. Just imagine that you are hearing it played over and over on the radio. This will help you really hear it and take an objective approach without being in a moment where it's happening and affecting your emotions and judgement.

Once you have identified it, now you can take the steps to re-program it so it may start working for you instead of against you. It isn't wrong or bad, it is doing its job that it was programmed to do! You can't simply throw it out because it may get replaced by another negative thought. It did serve a purpose for you, so say thanks and transform it with the new goal to serve you again now. It's strong, even though it's small, so make it useful in a new role by giving it new content.

The small things really do count and by getting Tuned In to yours, you'll be on your way to cutting through the static of your work, your money and your life. Just don't punch anyone when thay say, "Don't sweat the small stuff." I would recommend just sharing your secret and allow them to get Tuned In too.

Win The Race

A great way to get Tuned In each day is to read something new. May I recommend Roy Williams, Monday Morning Memo. It is delivered each Monday morning and always features something that will make you think about your work, your money or your life. Monday Morning Memo

This week Roy discussed a new book called, “The Age of Speed” by Olympic speed skier Vince Poscente. I particularly liked the part where Vince challenges the fable of the Tortoise and the Hare. He says, “The hare doesn’t lose because he’s fast – speed does not work against him in any way. And the tortoise doesn’t win because he is slow. The hare loses because he makes a ridiculous choice about how to spend his time.”

Time. Focus. Purpose. Clarity. Commitment. These are the things Vince Poscente talks about.

I believe there no losers, no predefined paths and no requirements to get what you want in life. You have to get Tuned In to your purpose with great clarity. Then make a commitment and focus on your greatness, even when others don't. When you use your time each day to stay Tuned In to these areas, little by little, you will make it there. But, if you put your focus elsewhere and start to let others define you instead of believing in the great gifts that only you can define for the world...you may end up feeling like the hare.

You are meant to win the race...how you run it is simply up to you. If something you are doing today is not working, change it immediately and don't waste time in waiting for a choice to find you. It you wait too long, it may be too late. Focus on your ultimate purpose and keep running toward it. The path will change daily, but the obstacles are just part of the journey. No successful person has ever run the race without experiencing conflict, a detour or stopping for a minute to re-evaluate. They stay flexible and understand that the strategy going into a race will change many times before they cross the finish line.

Are you clear on your purpose? Get Tuned In to what you were born to do today by taking a few minutes to sit alone. Clear your head and ask yourself the question, "What is my true purpose in life?" The answer is there. It may not come to you immediately, but keep asking until you get that "A-Ha!" moment. Then follow it with all your power and I promise that things will start to happen. Why? Because you won't be focused on the speed, but the right choices each day to get you there. You will win the race.
