When I was a child I was raised under the culture that children should be seen and not heard. We didn't eaves drop on 'adult' conversations, never talked back or 'sassed' a grownup and certainly respected our elders, whether they were wrong or right. Of course we attended church regularly which was and as far as I know is still a strong part of Black culture. The adage "It takes a village to raise a child" had great meaning in my childhood days. Today, it seems we have lost a few generations because value systems nowadays seem to change like 'fashion'.
