Nikki is a writer and the author of Hope in Small Doses, a new book from Humanist Press that presents a version of hope that relies not on certainty but on possibility. Feisty, erudite and deeply moving, this is an uplifting book offering a workable blueprint for a reasonably happy life. We could all use hope right now, Stern suggests.  The notion of hope in small doses may seem unnecessarily cautious, but we can always ask for seconds. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, Newsweek, USA Today, Humanist Magazine, Salon and Talking Writing. Ms. Stern is a twenty-year public relations veteran who became involved in activism following the death of her husband on 9/11. After serving as the 9/11 families liaison to the New Jersey Governor’s office, she became executive director of Families of September 11 FOS11. For her role in co-sponsoring a series of meetings that brought together Muslim and non-Muslim communities, she and FOS11 shared a Common Ground award in 2005 from the global conflict transformation group Search for Common Ground. Ms. Stern, who holds a Masters in Political Science from Georgetown University, serves on the advisory boards of Project Rebirth, Americans for Informed Democracy and the Public Diplomacy Collaborative at Harvard University’s Ash Institute for Democratic Governance and Innovation. Nikki writes regularly at various online outlets, including nikkistern.com. She is an experienced public speaker who presents on critical thinking and on living with uncertainty.
