How To Know If You’re Setting Your Child Up For The “Drug Of The New Millennium”
Warning: It alters brains at the cellular level.
Like a drug dealer’s fantasy, this drug is easily accessible, affordable, users are often secretly addicted, and this drug can be aggressively distributed with speed and ease bringing in billions of dollars each year. This millennial drug is p*ornography!
You’ve probably heard some moral debates over p*ornography. Some argue it’s just for fun, it acts as a relationship “spark”, or it has to be allowed because of freedom of expression. I think you’ll agree that each of us has the freedom to make our own moral judgment calls. The purpose of this article is not to engage in morals, but in facts, effects, and science so we can each make our own decisions.
“Like a deer caught in the headlights,” as Mark Kastleman, author of the text this article is based on, The Drug of the New Millennium: The Brain Science Behind Internet Pornography Use, I was stunned at the scope and power of p*ornography. I’m old enough to know life before the internet, I use it for work and shopping, and my kids are still young, so I admit, I was one of those moms who needed to be informed because I thought it was nothing I had to worry about in my own home. I didn’t realize p*ornography could be predatory, that no one is immune to it, or that young kids are also at risk for addiction. Learning that p*ornography causes cellular changes in the brain was my biggest shock of all!
Brilliant brain scientists, neuropsychologists, and therapists helped Mark do a great job explaining the neuroscience behind p*ornography’s power to alter the brain in the chapter, “The Science of How P*ornography Radically Alters the Brain.” He shares cutting-edge brain science behind the “enormous addictive power of p*ornography” and the research that states “a p*ornographic psychopharmacological flood” of neurochemicals that cause the brain to change resembling the brains of persons who use amphetamines, opiates, and psychedelic drugs!
I don’t want my kids exposed to a powerful “eroto-toxin, triggering a response so powerful that we have no natural built-in mechanism to cope with it—it is complete and total overload” leading to quick addiction to endogenous chemicals!
All of these chemicals cause cellular changes in the brain. If you’re wondering how the brain reacts differently to healthy relationship s*ex as opposed to p*ornography, the answers in Mark’s book will probably shock you as much as it did me.
How do we know if we are unknowingly setting our kids up to be exposed to this “drug of the new millennium?” Mark tells us to “Shut down the gateway to p*ornography addiction.” Here are a few suggestions from Mark’s book you and I can do:
Addiction to p*ornography is documented to not only change brains but to destroy lives. Some children will even act out what they see. You may have even heard some disturbing news reports about children acting out what they’ve been exposed to.
The good news is there is a lot we can do as moms to help protect our kids in our homes and teach our children what to do when they are on their own. If you’re wondering what signs to look for in a person who might be addicted to p*ornography, or if you have any other questions about p*ornography, get Mark’s book. When you buy it new, you’ll get a free audio CD that has more information on it. I’ve already listened to mine and given it away to help share the information with other moms.
