The founder of New York’s African American Women in Cinema Festival, now in its 13th year, Terra Renee vests her passion into promoting women of color in film and celebrating diversity in film-making, harkening back to the tenacity and activism of the recently deceased Lena Horne. As with so many authentic, indie ideas, Terra started the now-renowned New York festival with no intention of it becoming an annual event. Terra’s motivation for founding the festival stems back to an audition, some 13 years’ ago, that surely must have thrust her into the spotlight. Terra had arrived to audition for a role that matched her qualifications to the proverbial “t.” Or so she thought.
