Amanda Herring with Feed a Friend. Carolyn Zahnow is the author of “Save the Teens” - a book in which she shares her discoveries about teen suicides and depression. The book was a result of losing her only child to suicide in 2005. During the year following her 18 year old son's death, Carolyn researched all the topics that might bring a teen to commit such a dreadful act. At the end of a year, she determined she had enough material for a book that might be helpful to other parents who think their own child might be suffering from depression and/or drug abuse. Carolyn started a grassroots effort to teach parents and other adults the signs of teen depression and substance abuse before the book was released. This is accomplished by speaking to PTA groups, libraries, and other public venues. Carolyn is also the founder and facilitator of the Wake Forest Survivors of Suicide support group where members can talk freely about the topic of suicide and their loss. She attended a similar group shortly after her son died and knows the benefit of support groups.
