    Just Jump In!

Jon Gorden from Northern Florida has an unusual ritual he does on January 1st of every year. He jumps into the ocean and the water is cold enough to give him a good jolt! Why does he do this? It's a reminder for him to GO FOR IT, to live with trust not fear.

How did his ritual start? Seven year ago, everything seemed to be coming together. He had a good job with a dot.com company, and he was about to open a restaurant. His plan was to keep his job until the restaurant started making a profit. His wife and he put almost their entire savings into the restaurant.

Then, a month before his restaurant was set to open, the dot.com downsized. He lost his job. He wondered how he was going to take care of his wife and two young children with no salary, barely any savings, and a new restaurant that at best would take months to turn a profit? He had never been so scared in his life.

For the first time, Mr. I Can Do It All couldn't do it all. And for the first time he surrendered. "Help me, God" he prayed. "Provide for me and my family. I will do whatever you ask of me." He went out and marketed the restaurant 1000 percent. But he couldn't shake the fear that they might not get out of the mess.

So on New Year's day 2001, he took the plunge. Literally into the chilly Atlantic waters. Symbolically into living a life where his trust is much bigger that his fear.

They broke even the first week. The second, third and fourth. Unheard of in the restaurant industry. A consulting gig came out of the blue. His wife said, "Jon, don't you see? We're being carried." Just as their savings trickled down to the last dime, the restaurant made its first profit. He finally understood: When you trust, great things happen.

So let's all jump into 2008 with Jon. Here's to a year of living fearlessly!
