"Ping pong balls before rice" is the most important tip Walter Meyer teaches. We have a tendency to want to do the little, easy things first: answer emails, make phone calls, etc., instead of the big projects that are going to require big blocks of time. Then it gets to be 4 o'clock and you still have to do 3 hours of work on that big project and end up staying late--again. A lot of time is wasted figuring out what to do next.
