The teen years are challenging, shaped by major life transitions emotionally, physically and mentally.  It is also a time when anxiety and other mental health issues are likely to appear for teens.  Overall in the U.S.  approximately 20% of adolescents have a diagnosable mental health disorder.  And between 20% and 30% of adolescents have one major depressive episode before they reach adulthood.  What support do teens need to stay mentally and emotionally balanced through these years?  What can parents do to help teens who do develop depression or anxiety?  How can you help teens through these challenges?

This week's episode addresses these important issues.  We will have a young woman, Jennica Miller, who was diagnosed withl different disorders by different doctors as a teen.  She will share her challenges, how she has healed herself and gone on to be a happy young woman.  Dennis Thompson, a family counselor with NAMI, the Naitonal Alliance on Mental Illness, will share a lot of information about mental illness and how families can support youth and each other.
