    The Music Of Yester-Year

I am a huge fan of Cathy Holloway-Hill's Show-- Living By Design. She absolutely has a strong platform that speaks to everyone, but embraces issues that women and sisterhood can relate to. She hosts the show with Tony and the two deliver a quality show every time I have listened in.
She tackles issues of Motherhood, Depression, Divorce,Keeping our children safe from predators & abductors, to interviewing authors like Kimberla Lawson-Roby to discussing family values as well as family dysfunction. Well, I was waiting with baited breath, anticipating her latest show because she and Tony were doing a "Listener's Appreciation Night" featuring The incomparable Howard Hewett. I have been waiting for this show for weeks now  and with the demands of life and trying to juggle too many balls,  caring for my mom who is now up in age and now  ill,  I missed it anyway!  Thank God for archives! (smiles)  As I listened to the show post it's 'LIVE' airing, it was indeed a pleasure to go back down memory lane and to feel the good love, good vibrations and positivity in this show's segment. Howard was down to earth, connected to his fans and so open to all. He is  a spiritual being and thats just one of the character traits I love about him. Though I have never met him in person, I know several people who know him, and the mutual words like  integrity, humility, humorous, family man,God-fearing,  sincere and genuine ways are always mentioned. he can not just heard but felt  when he speaks and  it makes you feel like you truly are up close and personal with him. I have always dug this bother, this man!
I have heard so much about him from sources who have met or do know him, its nice to hear of someone of his caliber being consistent, committed and true to God and family.. As I listened to him sing Happy Birthday to Linda (a caller), sing some of his old school tunes  to make us swoon..lol...and then of course the ever popular and always requested song 'Amen', it moved me to ponder what has happened to great music today? I remember my father (a music buff) when he often times seemed stuck  in the past to me in the late eighties, early nineties...always making reference to "This new music this or that" and  being very vocal about its  beginning dis-connect, lack of respect and mediocre lyrics...I would accuse him of  (my  thinking at the time) I would accuse him of being  stuck in a time warp of some kind. There were a few current artists of the day that appealed to his tastes, but they weren't many! Now in my mid-forties and having experienced a definite change in music....change in the times...and having to keep current because as a parent you are constantly monitoring your kid's musical diet....I hate to say that I now understand where my dad was coming from. There was always music being played in our home. I know not a day went by that we didn't hear music. It is the heart soul and yes...the soundtrack of our lives. It chronicles our loves, losses, struggles and triumphs. It reminded us that we were somebody, talented beyond measure and it uplifted us to higher heights! Personally, emotionally, racially and spiritually. There was a pride in our music that translated over into our own self esteem and self worth! It was music with a message, feel good music. It was as much a part of us as eating and breathing!  From the sounds of  Sam Cooke,Wilson Pickett, Etta James, Millie Jackson, The Temptations, The Supremes, The O'Jays,The Four Tops,  The Isley Brothers, Brother's Johnson, Peaches and Herb, Betty Wright, Sam People's,Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, BB King, James Brown,Smokey Robinson, The Jackson 5, Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle,  Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, James Cleveland, Mississippi Mass Choir, The Crouche's,  The Hawkins Family, The Winans, Shirley Ceasar, Gladys and The Pips, Phil Perry, Miles Davis, Dizzy,Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Gerald Albright, John Coltrane and on and on, we could  and did listen, sing along, and enjoy music as a family. Not just my family...but the black community as a whole. The solid gold seventies brought an extension of that good music onto American Bandstand,Soul Train, Ed Sullivan Show and so many more. Music was essential!
I just wanted to express my thoughts regarding the major shift in music as we know it today. My son now turning 18 in a few days, has been fortunate to develop  a wide variety of tastes in music due to his environment and my refusal to allow him to just digest "any old kind of music"  loves everything from classical, to Jazz, R&B, House music, old school, fusion, and some Hip hop and rap. This show really made me take a look back and long for the strong music we once had and shared together as a people. Music like  Heatwave,Tina Marie, Angela Bofill, Atlantic Starr, Shalamar, Jodi Watley, R-Kelly's Steppin' in the name of Love & , Turning Back the hands of time, The Gap Band, Earth wind & Fire, and you all know the list is endless. Howard mentioned Mary J Blige, Neyo, Chris Brown, Jaheim, and there have been and are  others...Gerald Levert, Trey songz, MusiqSoulChile, Joe, who are trying to keep the legacy going. It is a necessity that we do that. While lil Kim gets to ponder the number of licks it takes  to get to the center of a lollipop and lil Wayne says she wants to lick him like a lollipop, I wonder if we haven't really realized what we have lost through the last two decades. I am all for change. But great change. I like many hip hoppers and rappers out there, but where are our conscious people...India Arie, Anthony Hamilton, Jill Scott, Flowetry? Is that it? How do you feel about this great shift and what can be done to change it? I would love to hear you sound off. As Mary J says..I will be just fine....but it would be nice to hear from some new Keith washington's, Chante' Moore's, and yes ...Howard Hewett's. my dad wasn't stuck although he was mourning...grieving the loss of quality and integrity in music. I so wish we could get that back.Erykah Badu says Next Lifetime...Angie Stone says Black brotha, Luther wanted to dance with his father again and Beyonce' wants you to Listen....there are some things that truly are irreplacable...sometimes we do have to sound the alarm....will we ever get back to the standards that were so highly set? Will our tomorrows ever be re-filled with the Love and Happiness  of (Al Green) or the  reassurance that a Change gone come? I sure hope so. They say things return in cycles. Hopefully we will find our way back to Teddy's sexual healing, The Temps treat her like a lady and Barry White's Never Gonna give you up! Lets hope that instead of just pulling songs back from yester-year and using them for advertising commercials and remixes, that a new breed will become motivated, moved and inspired to give us a taste of and the feel of the magic we know good music can bring. Thank you Cathy for such an awesome time with Howard. Much continued success to you.And may we all strive to try a little tenderness.Especially towards one another...the world is really in need of love today....and music is the corded strand that can sew us back together. I am always listening...I know you are too.
God bless you for reading my thoughts.

    Deadly Emergency Rooms......

I was listening to one of my favorite blog talk shows and this topic snagged my heart as well as my fury! A black woman, apparently seeking care in King's County Hospital in Brooklyn New York, met her death due to poor staffing, apathy among staff, lack of funding for quality health care and once again, the disparaging truth that this woman age 49, would not have died in a white Hospital. I recently went through an experience with my mother. She is 74 years old with great health coverage, however, the care she was receiving in a Rehabilitation facility here in Texas caused me much frustration, anger and eventually led to my having my mom transferred outof that facility and into a safe haven for the care she deserved!  I have issues pending with the state regarding this facility and I am outraged that here in America there is a battlefield full of wounded and sick people who are not being properly cared for. The almost exact incident took place in an LA Hospital where 2 women died from lack of medical attention. You might expect this if the patient is en route to the hospital, or didn't seek care to begin with, but how does a nation justify the neglect...the blatant neglect that we are seeing these days. When I lived abroad, it always amazed me how the health care was available for all citizens, not a select group. How housing and purchasing of transportation is made available. Education and most any issue you can think to name that seems to be an unattainable problem here in the United States. I am saddened by this discussion. My heart goes out to the many families and the patients who exercised their right be treated and instead died! This is deplorable! We need to get busy writing letters to our elected city officials, Governors, Senators, The President! When will the madness end? You tell me?! Racism is like a cancer that is eating us alive!  How much longer will those affected stand by and not claim what should be a right for ALL PEOPLE!?

A Change Gone Come.....With or Without You!

It is such a shame that in this era of time the hatred that flows forth so easily in America has been nurtured and is alive and well. STILL....That is some strong emotion isn't it? Have we examined why?  I think we are so busy as African Americans, Christians, Coloreds, Blacks, whatever term makes you feel comfortable use it. We have been so busy trying to assimilate, digress and fit in tat we have an identity crisis like no other group or culture on the globe. Ignorance begats ignorance so until we begin serious searching and finding God in His word, we will not grow, nor will we receive the gift of Revelation knowledge. What is that..? It is what Keeps you from stumbling around in the dark! Some real things began to dawn....don't we want to know what that ultimate plan is for all of us...the plan God has perfected?   I think Barack and Michelle Obama are doing wonderful things in preparation to win the white house in 2008!  And though I often pray God's Omnipotent protection over them (their family)   I realize that with all things in life come risks, chances and outcomes. If we are learning nothing else, I would hope that it would be that we MUST learn to embrace change. Look beyond skin tones/hues and stop twisting words that Black people speak. We are so dumbed down that we allow whites to make bold statements to our face, and about us behind our backs and are too cowardly to stand up?? Whats up with that?  Keith Oberman of CNN's News Countdown has come to our rescue far too many times in the name of truth and justice for all.  A modern day newscaster who actually stands on the side of what is right and good versus what side of the tracks HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE ON! Bless that man and his mouth. Same with Anderson Cooper, son of Designer Gloria Vanderbilt. These will not be silenced and Oh don't get me started on Father Pfleger who spoke his amendment  right of free speech and was made to apologize. ,Let me not start in on Minister Farrakhan, who has tirelessly proven more than he has talked, that he is not anti-semitic, nor anti-Christian. I wish dogmatic propaganda would shut up and shrink like the evil entity it is.  and Rev. Jeremiah Wright well lets just say there is always a loose cannon (lol) however, The posturing and the words coming forth though offensive to many, are merely the words they are thinking but are fearful of saying aloud. . The last shall be first!  Prophetically, people of color DO  have an appointed time with destiny and it has everything to do with God, when, where and how we arrive at that destination is HIS call ....I say tread lightly in these matters in days to come. Our black brothers and sisters, and sisters and brothers in God regardless of color must live today by a moral and spiritual code that institutes truth as its compass! The truth shall set one free. And though it is difficult  for many of our own to understand, prayer is key right now........not mentally tearing down..... That crabs in a barrel gets us every time doesn't it??!!   Aren't these of us who are negative, filled with self and racial loathing tired?? The shackles need to come off. Off of the mind that is still sadly on LOCK DOWN!   "The man" and the Corporate system did a wonderful and thorough job enslaving us. So well they have to do nothing now........just sit back and watch us continue to inflict, infect and kill off our own. Kill off ideas, creativity, positivity, life, opportunity, love, support, uplifting,encouraging...etc. We are so brain dirtied!! As Pontius  Pilate said..I wash my hands of this. When will we find the spine that will allow the legs to stand strong? The dirty mind washing is the lynching tool of this new millenium and it is working effectively. Very much so.  I wish we could somehow be BRAIN-WASHED!  Cleansed...atoned from the inside out. Maybe then we could lift the scales from our third eye, hear with the ear God is speaking of which refers to the 'HEAR'T (issues)God is so fervently trying to get us to SEE!  If  we could progressively take our rightful place as children of the most High God. Our feet planted and no more groveling on our knees, we would find our fortitude and our God given power!  This 'Stand' should be done with dignity and should cross all racial and gender barriers and blockades.  We shall perish for lack of knowledge. America has dealt in shiesty affairs for far too long.. Black, white, red, brown, yellow, we all know this fact. God said IF MY PEOPLE who are called by my name, shall humble themselves seek my face and turn from their WICKED WAYS, then will they hear from heaven and I will heal their land! This land is SICK, its an infested sore oozing its poison out onto those who haven't yet had a chance to innately do the right thing. America taints them and the cycle continues.  What is the solution? The Revolution? The Resolution?  The only way to restore this broken country, to renew  it,  is to let God be the head, let the hating cease and Let His will...not our enforced, or ignorant wills, but God's will Be DONE! Just my humble opinion friends. Thanks for allowing me to vent,
Speak love...do all things in love...for God who created us all...is LOVE!
    Vicki
PS Jesse Jackson you should be ashamed of yourself for the remarks you made. It is almost unforgivable! Such acts or treason against or defamation of character is too costly and too damaging. When you said "I am Somebody...we believed that. When you formed a rainbow Coalition we joined...How dare you spit on Barack Obama. Jesse Jackson shame on you!

    Black America and Police Brutality

Greetings My sisters and brothers. Tonight Brother Wisdom had a compelling show on relating to the Bell case and the acquittals that came forth as a result of excessive police brutality in this case. It is a scene revisited. We have seen it in so many cases involving black people and law enforcement it is outrageous! The sentiments of many were "Enough is enough" We have for too long been trying to avoid action as in unifying forces and getting some results. We are talking about being tired and not letting fear, apathy and ignorance continue to allow this cycle of violence to continue. For me, I have always been passionate about the treatment we as AA descendants receive in this country.Angry to say the least. No matter how hard we work, how educated we become, how much we contribute to society, there is always this unspoken fraternal code that remains embedded in the minds and actions of Corporate/white America. Our ancestors built this country with their bare hands...sweat blood and many tears doing it. We sill are unfairly treated or ignored. Every race of people here in America has received some sort of Government assistance, reparations etc..yet we still wait in vain, and while doing so we still rise  above the hatred and greed. It is my hope hat after this Jena Six tragedy, the Bell tragedy, the abdulla tragedy, the Rodney King tragedy, and every one that goes unheard of, that we can finally wake from this stupor we are in and take action. Whatever it may be, no matter how large or small, "lets do something versus nothing at all". The Hurricane Katrina disaster was another slap in the face. We just celebrated Martin Luther King's Anniversary of his death. 40 years later we are worse off than when King, Malcolm,Jesse Jackson, Julian Bond, Al Sharpton, Rosa Parks, The Black Panthers and so many others, were out there on the streets being beaten, whipped, chased by dogs, hosed down, jailed, and constantly harassed. It is time to wake up from the dream. We can no longer afford to sleep on this. As the Confederate Flag so boldly waves...still, we must begin to re-access how we can make changes that will affect permanent change for us all? Isn't the Constitution for us as well as any American citizen? Do we know the law and how to make it work for us? Do we even care now that since it may not be happening  directly to someone we know, love, like or hate the issues are moot? Marvin Gaye asked so many years ago...a visionary...here and gone way before his time....Whats Going On? He cried Father Father.....back in the day and still there are far too many of us dying. Far too many mothers crying. We have  must find a way to bring some understanding here today and some long over due  justice.. You may not agree, you may not want to see...but this revolution is very much in session and as Gil Scott Herron so eloquently put it...The revolution Will Not Be Televised". That was then, this is now...in my humble opinion, if we would all wake up, embrace being the beautiful people we are.We would clearly see that the REVOLUTION is not only in session, racism alive and thriving like never before....but it is in fact happening, RIGHT BEFORE OUR VERY EYES.
    Peace,Empowerment and Progress!
