WOW! That’s all I have left to say after using every expletive imaginable at the end of the KC/SD game. I knew last week when the LVSC set the line for this game with a spread of +15 that there would be some profit takers who’ve watched KC’s past few games with some interest (read: close losses against strong teams likeTB and NYJ) who would be eager to jump on that number. Especially when you consider just how dismal the Chargers have looked this season, I gladly took +15.5 (by the time I got to wager).
So, why was I screaming colorful metaphors at my TV on a Sunday afternoon? Coach Edwards’ decision to go for it. Some guys with an over exuberance of machismo and testosterone will commend Coach Edwards for showing the balls and guts in going for two on the road after a dramatic 2 minute drill and a questionable penalty levied against the Chargers got KC within one after a TD with seconds to go in the 4th.
However, we’re talking about a 1-7 team going into the game that had an opportunity to tie it up and force SD’s bipolar offense or defense to take the field against them. Even if the Chiefs lost the OT coin toss, SD’s O took their time showing up to the game yesterday and Rivers didn’t do the Bolts any favors by throwing two balls to the wrong team while the Chiefs managed to avoid any turnovers. Thigpen and crew looked good throwing 3 TD’s, 2 of them to “Trade Me” Gonzalez. So the question remains; Why not take the Rivalry Game into OT?
The decision to go for 2 on a pass was, in my humble opinion, bad game management. The Chiefs had the lead for most of the game, only to lose it briefly on Rivers’ 2nd TD toss of the game in the waning stages of the 4th quarter. If Herm Edwards wants out of KC that bad, why not ask to be released. That was how I interpreted the call yesterday. Similar to the “Kiffin”, where the former coach of the Raiders sent Janikowski out to attempt a 70-something yard FG as a way to thumb his nose at Al Davis. Historically speaking, 2 point conversions are hard to come by and an OT win, though somewhat predicated on the winner of the coin toss, are somewhat easier when you compare the two.
Some have said that Coach Edwards was trying to give his team something to get fired up about with a dramatic win. How fired up would you be as a player, fan, or owner not to see your coach take a less risky gamble and go for it in OT instead of walking off the field as losers for the eighth time this year. Maybe that’s why the aforementioned future Hall of Fame TE Gonzalez wanted out of KC after all; Poor Coaching.
