Our guests this morning are Johnny and Diane Hake. Johnny and Diane are residents of Julian, CA and are Program Managers and TTT Instructors for the Julian/Cuyamaca Community Emergency Response Team and TEEN CERT.

In 2003, a small fire was burning in Ramona, 25 miles from Julian. The Hakes had prior experience with fires in the area and didn’t feel it was close enough to require evacuation.

Instead, they took their grandchildren and dog and headed to the beach for a day of fun. While they were at the beach, the winds turned, the fire roared and they were unable to return home for a week. When they did, it was to discover over 700 homes were destroyed including every structure on their property.

It was called the Cedar Fire and along with thousands of other Julian residents, the Hakes lost their home, business and all their possessions including their fire insurance policy and other important documents. They learned the hard way, when the insurance company couldn’t find their paperwork, just how important it is to keep documents safe.

In the course of rebuilding their lives, the Hakes were determined to get prepared for any emergency situation.

They also had the privilege of teaching Tribal TEEN CERT to their Los Coyotes neighbors and plan to continue their partnership with the Tribal Nations.
