Our guest this morning is Rob McGowan, President of the International Surf Festival taking place July 31st through August 5th.
Ron was born and raised in Manhattan Beach, became a Junior Lifeguard at the tender age of 9 and competed in the 1st International Surf Festival at age 10.
He was on the varsity swim and water polo teams in high school, became a Huntington City Beach Lifeguard at age 16 and a Los Angeles County Beach Lifeguard at 18.
Rob was on the swim team at UC Santa Barbara and graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a degree in Marine Biology. He was promoted to Permanent Full-time Ocean Lifeguard for Los Angeles County in 1984 and became a Captain Ocean Lifeguard in 1992.
With over 40 years as an ocean lifeguard, Rob retired from county service as the Southern Section Headquarters Captain in 2009.
He has taught, coached, served and chaired on the boards of the California Surf Lifesaving Association, the United States Lifesaving Association, is the current President of the International Surf Festival and one of three ISF Coordinators.
Rob has been married to the same beautiful wife for 26 years and the proud father of three boys, ages 18, 23 and 25. Two of the three are University of California graduates and ocean lifeguards.
