Nancy is joined by Dr. Michael J. Sateia, Chair of the Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies, or APSS, also known as SLEEP 2009. Why should this conference matter to the public? Sleep is essential to everyone’s lives. Sleep has a direct impact on our health, our productivity, our relationships and more. It is at this meeting that the latest advances in the field of sleep medicine and sleep research are presented, information and advances that can ultimately impact recommendations for quality sleep, as well as for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. Come hear about what’s up in the world of sleep.

Thanks to our guests and listeners for a great back-to-school episode

What a fantastic time we had yesterday with Dr. Kristen Hedger Archbold!  She is full of wisdom about the sleep of our families.  Be sure and listen to the archived show if you haven't already.

She gave her top five sleep tips for the new school year:
    1. Set a bedtime routine.  Help your kids establish a regular set of steps that happen prior to going to sleep.  This will help your child wind down and know what to expect every day.
    2. Make your pre back-to-school days match the school schedule.  Before the first day of school, start making your waking and bedtime schedule match that of the school year.
    3. Cut out the caffeine.  Caffeine after 3 p.m. can hinder sleep for both kids and adults.  And, caffeine can hide in places like green tea and chocolate.
    4. Establish a communication curfew.  Set a time for everyone in the house to turn off electronics - an hour prior to bedtime is recommended.  This means turning of the TV, computers, and even cell phones.
    5. Watch your weekend schedule.  Don't mess up your sleep routine on the weekend.  Try to keep your wake-up and bedtime close to what it is during the weekend.  Suddenly staying up late and waking up early resets the body's internal clock.  Getting back in the swing on school on Monday is tough when this happens.

Good sleep, radio shows, and power outages - Power Outage Causes Show to Reschedule for Aug 15

We were sad to learn today that a power outage in Arizona would make it impossible for us to have a great show with our guest Dr. Kristen Archbold today.  We're trusting that the power will be on tomorrow and the show will go on.

Thanks for your patience and join us for a great show tomorrow!
