Poverty and Poor Health in the African American Community

Does poverty lead to poor health in the African American community? Despite improvements in the overall health of Americans during the past few decades, African Americans, American Indians, and persons of Hispanic origin, tend to have more chronic health problems, live in poverty, lack insurance coverage, and be unable to work because of a disability. These disparities are complex, and rooted in an inequitable health care system.  Contributing factors include lack of  access to health care; barriers to care; biological, socioeconomic, ethnic, and family factors; cultural values and education; and culturally insensitive healthcare systems.
