    Date / Time:

OSU VS CBJ ...Enough Is Enough!

BallHype: hype it up! Add to RootZoo

Time to wake up the masses in Ohio. Once again, the Jackets have been dumped on by a couple various internet OSU fanboys who think that college sports are the greatest thing known to man. Stop the press, break out the champagne, because I really think they managed to equate their second grade community college writing skills into a few plausible sentences this time (albeit laced with ignorance and blatant disrespect).

I do not care for OSU sports. Is that sufficient enough of a lead in for me to move on? Not really. I grew up in Canada. Where I come from, hockey is a way of life. In fact, I imagine my focus on hockey is probably comparable to their love of college sports, and the love for Ohio’s best representation each year. But does that make me believe that I am afforded the right to suggest that OSU sports are nothing more than childish competitions between kids not even old enough to buy alcohol? No. It most certainly is not, just as it isn’t Joe Schmo’s right to suggest that the Blue Jackets do not have a right to succeed in buckeye country.

I have been fairly complimentary towards the Columbus Dispatch for their efforts to support the Blue Jackets day to day, and I will continue to do so. Having said that, I can not believe they allowed for these fans of Ohio State whatever to talk poorly about a team that is struggling to generate interest from fans, let alone the players in the league. Would it be different if the Jackets already had a couple post-season victories, or a Stanley Cup? Would these fanboys be more interested in accepting the sport if they had Sidney Crosby or Alex Ovechkin bursting through the middle making sports center night after night? Oh, that is right, Sports center is too busy mapping out the next bracketed COLLEGE LEVEL event to provide in depth coverage of the National Hockey League.

I recognize the value of hockey in the United States, and I can honestly tell you all right now that I do not care what market analysis crap is spitting out at the general public. It is by far one of the most trying and difficult sports there is to play, and it deserves a fair chance to reach every household. This embarrassment spewed all over the dispatch is devastating to those who have compassion for Ohio State, but are considering following the Jackets. It’s just like the pink movement, or the ridiculous popped collar. All there needs to be is a couple of people who think it’s trendy, and suddenly everyone is doing it.

These Ohio State fans are confused. They do not realize what they are doing by shunning the Jackets. They are making their city look bad. I would honestly love to meet one person who has gone to a hockey game with someone who knows hockey, learned, and come away thinking it was a waste of time. If they put half an ounce of effort into enjoying a Blue Jackets game, I guarantee they will be dazzled by the sport. Give CBJ management a reason to bring in more talent by filling the seats.

So rather than countering these fans with how little I respect their beloved school and the programs that relate to it, I challenge them. Give a legitimate professional sport a chance to thrive in that city, and tell me in two years whether they belong there. Support those smart OSU fans who have already made the transition and respect both school and team for what they can provide in terms of excitement.

    Enough of the crap.
