Peace Brother, I wouldn't be so quick to go as far as giving evil a pass. There have been alot of wrongs and oppression against people of color and indians by the hands of the white man in this country and abroad. We can forgive but lets not forget John Lewis, Emmett Till, Chaney, Schwerner and Goodman, Viola Luizzo, et al.Senator Walker, and many unsung hereos that have died and gave thier life at the hands of lynching and standing up for civil rights in this country. Sure we have been taught well how to hate and we have become so divided but there is some out there trying to hold the village together. Some of us have added to our demise and have worsen the problems but we didnt create it. Sistah Michelle

When I look at the video I wonder how does this cop feel after killing someone so cold blooded. What was he thinking when he shot a man in his back face down. This man went to his death for no reason and he is fearing jail. He should be giving the death penalty!

Your life is falling neatly into two categories -- fulfilling and not fulfilling. You'll be tempted to only pay attention to the more fulfilling tasks and projects, but that isn't a good long term strategy. Eventually you will have to deal with the rest of it, so aim for balance and work through this duality by alternating your attentions. Don't become too focused on one person or one idea. Spread your energy around. There are positives on both sides that you might not be seeing right now.

SAN FRANCISCO – A white former transit police officer accused of killing an unarmed black man on an Oakland train platform has been arrested in Nevada on a warrant charging homicide, 12 days after the shooting that sparked violent street protests. Johannes Mehserle, 27, was being held without bail Wednesday under a fugitive warrant issued from California, law enforcement officials said. Mehserle surrendered Tuesday without incident, according to a statement from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office in Nevada. Messages left late Tuesday and early Wednesday at the office of Mehserle's attorney, Christopher Miller, were not immediately returned. Alameda County District Attorney Tom Orloff was expected to announce details of the charges later Wednesday. Witnesses say Mehserle fired into the back of 22-year-old Oscar Grant while the man was lying facedown on a train platform at a station in Oakland. Grant and others had been pulled off a train after reports of fighting, as New Year's Eve revelers were shuttling home after midnight. The shooting, captured on cell phone cameras and widely viewed on the Internet, has inflamed long-running tensions between law enforcement authorities and many African-American residents and black community leaders, who have berated BART officials at several public meetings since the incident. Hundreds of protesters also have taken to the streets calling for the prosecution of Mehserle, with one rally last Wednesday spiraling into violence and resulting in more than 100 arrests and dozens of businesses damaged. John Burris, the attorney for Grant's family, said he talked to Grant's mother, Wanda Johnson, on Tuesday night and she was delighted with the news of the arrest. "However it does not bring her son back," Burris said. "But she is happy and pleased that an arrest has occurred." Jack Bryson of Hayward, whose sons, Jackie, 21, and Nigel, 19, were with Grant when he was killed, said late Tuesday the family also happy that Mehserle was arrested. He said his sons and others friends with Grant that night remain traumatized from the shooting. Bryson said he was with his oldest son when they got word about Mehserle's arrest via a text message. "Jackie said, 'Dad they got (Mehserle)! They got him!'" said Bryson, who then called his youngest son, Nigel. "He said, 'Are you for real?'" Bryson said. "He called me back and said, 'They did get him.'" Dereca Blackmon, the co-founder of the Coalition Against Police Execution, which was organizing a protest Wednesday, said she was pleased Mehserle was arrested but still wanted to know more details, including for example, why he was in Nevada. Authorities have not disclosed those details. "Honestly this situation brings more questions than answers," she said. Douglas County, where the arrest occurred, is 15 miles south of Carson City in northwestern Nevada and includes Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley. Mehserle refused to talk to BART investigators before resigning his position last week. The transit authority passed on details of its internal investigation to Orloff's office on Monday. The case also is being investigated by the Oakland Police Department. State Attorney General Jerry Brown has assigned a prosecutor to monitor the case, and the U.S. Department of Justice has dispatched mediators to help avert violent protests such as one in Oakland last week. BART board member Carole Ward Allen said she was pleased to hear the news about the arrest. "I want to know why he did it," she said. "We've heard from everybody else but him. While I can't speak for the entire BART board, we want to make this process as transparent as possible." (This version CORRECTS the nature of arrest warrant to homicide, instead of murder, per the sheriff's office.)

No job, no housing subsidy under plan Agency weighs making heads of households work 30 hours a week to keep federal subsidy. By Fred Clasen-Kelly frkelly@charlotteobserver.com Posted: Monday, Dec. 29, 2008 The Charlotte Housing Authority is considering giving thousands of public housing residents a choice: Get a job or get out. Agency leaders are proposing a plan that would force tenants to find work to keep their government housing benefits. The idea has prompted criticism from some advocates for the poor who say it would be wrong to impose the rule during the country's worst economic crisis in decades. But backers say it's only right to make able-bodied adults work and try to gain self sufficiency. “There's never a perfect time to start a change,” said Jennifer Gallman, a spokeswoman for the Housing Authority. “This is a positive change.” Under federal guidelines, recipients generally put 30percent of their household income toward rent. The federal government subsidizes the remainder. The proposal would require the head of each household to work at least 30 hours a week by April 1, 2011, to keep the subsidy. Elderly and disabled residents would be exempt. The Housing Authority's Board of Commissioners will decide next month whether to implement the rule. It would impact many of the 15,000 people in Charlotte who live in public housing apartments or rent homes from private landlords using government-issued Section 8 vouchers. A recent survey conducted for the Housing Authority found that the head of the household was employed in 31percent of public housing units. The head of the household was working in 43percent of homes rented with Section 8 vouchers. The employment rule is one of several restrictions the Housing Authority has implemented or weighed in recent years. Residents who move into some newer, recently built developments must now meet work requirements designed to move them out of public housing in five years. But the latest idea surfaces just as the unemployment rate in North Carolina has reached 7.9percent, the highest figure in 25 years. Alfred Riley, who lives in the Boulevard Homes public housing complex in west Charlotte, said he has tried hard “for a long time” but can't find work. The proposed rule “comes at the worst time ever,” Riley said. “People can't even find work at a fast-food restaurant.” Advocates for the poor fear the rule could add to Charlotte's growing homeless population. Many public housing tenants cannot afford daycare for their children and don't have needed transportation or job skills, said Ted Fillette, lead attorney with Charlotte's Legal Aid office. Some 30,000 people in North Carolina are on waiting lists for affordable daycare, Fillette said. Affordable daycare typically costs about $175 a week, he said. The Housing Authority has not promised to help pay to remove such barriers, Fillette said. Revoking subsidies is “tantamount to evicting families who have the least capacity to survive in the non-subsidized market,” he wrote in a letter to other local advocates for the poor. Gallman, the Housing Authority spokeswoman, noted that tenants would have two years to find work. Those who do not meet the requirement would receive up to two counseling sessions and a 90-day grace period. When the period ends, the agency would reduce an unemployed tenant's housing subsidy by 50percent. After that, officials would take away an unemployed tenant's entire subsidy. Gallman said the Housing Authority has studied how the rule worked in cities such as Atlanta, Baltimore and Chicago and found that it did not lead to increased homelessness, Gallman said. Charlotte officials, she said, may create programs or partner with other agencies to help tenants with daycare, transportation, job training or other obstacles. “They won't just throw people out,” Gallman said. Yes, and we're getting poorer every day, because the only way this is capitalism is if you spell it S-O-C-I-A-L-I-S-M (for corporations). You can read that as, "crony capitalism" if you want. What we have is a corrupt corporate state, run by corrupt companies who are merely using our Bailout tax dollars to pay for executive bonuses, junkets, and to buy each other out -- while throwing scraps to the poor surfs getting stuck with the bill. It's got to stop--and that means getting rid of those who voted "yes." It's time to just start over. Throw them all out, Dems and Republicans alike. There isn't an ounce of difference between them anymore anyway. Could the Libertarians or Greens really do any worse than this? Don't know how your Senators or Congress person voted? A new group called the Constituent Response Team has been working to solve that. CRT has put together a Bailout Vote Map that makes it easy (as a mouse click) to find out how your Senators and Representatives voted. Tell all your family and friends about it, so they can find out how their Representative and Senators voted before they cast their ballot on Tuesday. If you are interested, check out Constituent Response at http://www.constituentresponse.com . The Bailout Vote Map is on the main page.

The Poor People's Ca -- The economy hit a new low this week, and in every part of the country, people like you are feeling it. The recent financial disasters -- from the collapse of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to the historic drop in the stock market -- are not just a string of bad luck. They are the result of years of bad decisions made in favor of big corporate special interests instead of America's working families. More than 600,000 Americans have lost their jobs since January. Home foreclosures are skyrocketing, and home values are plunging. Gas prices are at an all-time high, and we're still spending more than $10 billion every month on a war in Iraq that should never have been waged. John McCain's campaign is doing everything it can to focus attention on false personal attacks and distractions -- but there's too much at stake for that kind of politics. I need your help to get the conversation back on track. I recorded a two-minute TV ad about our economy and my plan to solve this crisis.
9/18/2008 7:16 PM UTC
Dear Senator John McCain and RNC Chairman Robert M. Duncan, I just learned that Republicans in Michigan are planning to use foreclosure lists to keep struggling homeowners from voting, and I'm outraged. You stand to benefit from these practices and have been completely silent. This is simply unacceptable. This strategy is cruel -- kicking those hardest hit by the economy while they're down -- and it is also illegal. As the leaders of the Republican Party, you have a responsibility to stop these illegal voter suppression tactics in Michigan first, but also across the country. I'm calling on you to publicly denounce the use of foreclosure lists as a basis for challenging voters and demand that local, state and national Republican party leaders forbid this illegal and shameful strategy.

DNA linked boyfriend to Sauk Village teen's slaying, police say Teenage girl was strangled in Sauk Village creek By Emma Graves Fitzsimmons | Chicago Tribune reporter 10:43 PM CDT, September 10, 2008 The body of Brashai Griffin, 15, was found naked from the waist down submerged in a creek in Sauk Village, but there was enough DNA to link her sometime-boyfriend to her slaying, authorities said Wednesday. Timothy Easley, 18, of the 200 block of Mallard Drive in the far south suburb was held in lieu of $2.5 million bail Wednesday on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated criminal sexual assault. Easley is accused of strangling Griffin in Plum Creek near her home in April. Prosecutors said DNA led detectives to Easley, and Griffin's friends and family told police she had planned to see Easley the evening of April 3, the day she disappeared. Easley, wearing a loose T-shirt and dark jeans, did not say anything Wednesday as he stood with his hands behind his back before Cook County Judge Thomas Condon in a bond hearing in the Markham courthouse. His mother, aunt and sister were seated in the audience, said his lawyer, Angela Kilpatrick. Griffin's family also attended the hearing after appearing at a news conference Tuesday night where police announced the charges. Both teenagers attended Bloom Trail High School in Chicago Heights and had a tumultuous "on again, off again" relationship, police said. Griffin was reported missing April 3 when she did not return home from school. Her body was found the next day lying face down in Plum Creek, in a forest preserve near Torrence Avenue and 223rd Street. The county medical examiner's office ruled the death a homicide by strangulation. Asked why it took five months to file charges, Detective Robert Grossman said it took time to get results from the state crime lab. "You've got a lot of cooperation between agencies. . . . There's a lot of information to process, and we didn't want to risk being premature with anything." efitzsimmons@tribune.com E-mailShare Digg Del.icio.us Facebook Fark Google Newsvine Reddit Yahoo PrintReprint Related topic galleries: Crimes, People, Sexual Assault, Police, Assault, Murder, Rivers All topicsGet Chicago Tribune home delivery and save big. A school boycott, or not? Ministers rally to urge kids to stay home on first day of class, but a dads group opposes the idea as school funding issue is weighed By Robert Mitchum and Ray Long | Chicago Tribune reporters August 12, 2008 Nearly 50 ministers on Monday embraced plans for students to boycott at least the first day of Chicago Public Schools classes, a move aimed at ramping up pressure on state officials to address widespread inequities in education funding. The church leaders from the city's West and South Sides pledged their support as lawmakers return to Springfield on Tuesday to meet in a special session Gov. Rod Blagojevich called to consider the funding issue that has vexed lawmakers for decades. Gathering outside Marshall High School, 3250 W. Adams St., the ministers said they would urge their congregations and communities to participate in the first-day boycott Sept. 2 and attempt to enroll Chicago students in New Trier Township High School District 203 in north suburban Winnetka. "We refuse to continue to allow the State of Illinois to orphan our educational system," said Rev. Albert Tyson of St. Stephen AME Church. Also Monday, another group of clergy urged a different tactic on Chicago's first school day. Organizers of the 5th annual Million Father March asked fathers to escort children to class on Sept. 2. "The first day sets the tone for the entire year," said Rev. Sharyon Cosey, a former Chicago teacher. No one expects a resolution of the school-funding issue in Springfield this week, including Blagojevich, who for the first time Monday publicly expressed doubt that reform legislation would pass quickly. Sen. James Meeks (D-Chicago), the pastor of a major South Side church who is spearheading the boycott, and African-American lawmakers want funding reform on the front burner because wealthy communities spend thousands of dollars more on each student than do poorer districts. Blagojevich said he hoped progress could be made as soon as this fall, but he made it clear he disagreed with Meeks' call for a boycott. "It's counterproductive to urge kids not to attend school," Blagojevich said at a separate event. "If a child misses a day of school, that child will miss an opportunity to learn. I think children should take advantage of every possible day they can to go to school." Further, he said, Chicago Public Schools would lose some state money if students skip because average daily attendance helps determine each school district's overall funding. New Trier District 203 Supt. Linda Yonke, bracing for Meeks' attempt to enroll 1,000 students, labeled the ministers' move a "political action" she hopes won't be disruptive. Meeks has said Chicago students should not stop the boycott after one day. He wants the students to continue their protest by showing up in the lobbies of downtown Chicago buildings, where they could be taught by retired teachers as they wait for education funding reform. Like Mayor Richard Daley, Chicago school officials said they agreed with the ministers' goal of correcting disparity in state school funding but disagreed with their approach. "It's the right issue," said Rufus Williams, president of the Chicago Board of Education. "It's always the right time. But the method of keeping children out of school is one that we are diametrically opposed to." The minister's group gathered outside Marshall High supported the tactic. Comparing Marshall's 46 percent graduation rate to New Trier's 99.8 percent rate, Rev. Marshall Hatch of New Mt. Pilgrim Church denounced disparities in which students on the North Shore have thousands of dollars more spent on them than Chicago schoolchildren. "Money does matter," Hatch said. "The funding disparity, of course, brings not only unequal investment but obviously unequal outcomes."

Dear Friend, LaVena Johnson was 19 years old, serving in Iraq as a private in the Army, when she was raped, murdered, and her body was burned--by someone from her own military base. Despite overwhelming physical evidence, the Army called it a suicide and closed the case.[1] For three years, LaVena's parents have been fighting for answers. At almost every turn, they've been met with closed doors or lies. But together we can help achieve justice for LaVena and other families who have suffered similar tragedies.[2] Will you join me in standing with the Johnsons and calling on Henry Waxman, Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, to investigate the Army's cover-up of Lavena's death? And ask your friends and family to do the same? http://www.colorofchange.org/lavena/?id=1991-450647 Thanks. 1. "The cover-up of a soldier's death?" The Mission of the Poor People's Campaign is to promote the philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., of non-violent progressive social change. NEVER LOOK DOWN ON ANYONE UNLESS YOU'RE HELPING THEM UP If you feel like you're working hard to help others but no one seems to be appreciating your efforts, so what? If helping others was your true motivation, then why do you need recognition? If you're just trying to be good in order to get credit in someone's eyes, stop. There is no point in being kind unless you mean it. Not only will the act fail to impress people, the charade will cause you a lot of stress. Just be you and if that means being a little bit selfish, so be it. TOGETHER WE HAVE POWER MR JERRY L ROBINSON PRESIDENT&CEO
