For much of human history wolves have been mythologized, demonized and idolized. Wolves were wiped out from the Western landscape in the early 20th century by settlers who saw them as a threat. Through dedicated conservation efforts, wolves have now been restored to the Northern Rockies and are making a strong comeback. Continued recovery depends on finding ways for wolves and humans to coexist, and a big part of that is working with ranchers to protect their livestock. Defenders has been working hard for nearly 20 years to prevent conflict between wolves and livestock by encouraging the use of nonlethal deterrents. Portable fencing, guard dogs, cowboys and better husbandry techniques have proven successful in reducing livestock losses and creating a better future for wolves. In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show host, June Stoyer talks to wolf advocate and educator, Suzanne Stone, from Defenders.org to discuss wolf compensation and proactive conservation. Suzanne works directly with ranchers and farmers to provide compensation for wolf-related livestock losses and helping livestock owners devise and implement strategies to reduce wolf depredation conflicts. Suzanne is the lead author of Defenders' recent publication Livestock and Wolves: A Guide to Nonlethal Tools and Methods to Reduce Conflict, and she authored a chapter titled Building Tolerance for Wolf Restoration in the Rockies: Compensation and Nonlethal Deterrent Programs in University of Calgary's new publication: The World of Wolves: New Perspectives on Ecology, Behavior and Policy. Suzanne also developed Defenders' Livestock Producers Advisory Council. She currently serves on the Western Wolf Coalition steering committee to help promote wolf conservation within the region.
