Nigeria, the "Giant of Africa" is a country with plentiful resources and a population of over 170 million people. Over the past few years, the country has witnessed a rise in poverty rates and a severe economic decline. Furthermore, the past few years have witnessed the rise of a vicious terrorist group known as “Boko Haram” that has killed at least 1,600 Nigerian civilians since 2009.
Brandon Parsons and Sana Amin will be discussing the rise of Boko Haram and the decline of the security and economic conditions in Nigeria, linking this to the struggle over the country’s oil and natural resources. We will turn to a special guest, Onimisi Wordsmith, who is a poet, spoken word artist and social innovator from Abuja in northern Nigeria, to weigh in on the topic and document his experiences pertaining to the current events unfolding in Nigeria.
