It seems that if a government funded mental health professional deems you to be, in their official opinion, to have a 'mental illness', then your rights can be violated. Under this pretense, you can be arbitrarily detained and treatment can be forced on you against your will. Psychiatrists have in this way been elevated to some kind of god status; that their opinion, without any proper use of scientific evidence, is above any other and carries the force of statute law.
Many argue that government provided mental health is vital for the greater good of society, yet have little idea of how this system actually operates, making uninformed assumptions that it benefits those who are forced into it.
Bazra Parsons and David Lopez discuss the mental health system in Australia and other countries, both past and present, uncovering some truths that are often left in the dark and their wider implications for society.
