Call in to speak with the host

Tonight we are going to address the evolution of the hotly debated 1st Amendment. Our intent is to answer the initial question of why the 1st Amendment was written. We would also need to address how the 1st Amendment should be implemented; should there be a blanket application of this amendment or should there be a more stringent application to say the federal government than the state government or than the individual.

It should be noted that the system that we live in does not operate as a single unit but rather a multilayered entity. With this premise in place how should we apply the 1st Amendment? Should businesses have more or less protection of freedom of speech than an individual? Should Federal Government have more or less protection of freedom of speech than states? The first writing of the 1st Amendment by Madison on June 8, 1789 read “The people shall not be deprived or abridged of their right to speak, to write, or to publish their sentiments; and the freedom of the press, as one of the great bulwarks of liberty, shall be inviolable.”  What do you think about ‘Freedom of Speech, ‘what does it really mean?
