Double Dutch Jump-a-Thon and Cancer Research

Today I got inspired by one of my friends on Twitter. She mentioned that she could never jump into the turning ropes during double dutch.  Funny how inspiration happens.  I thought about how I haven't seen anyone jump double dutch in years. Then the idea of accepting a challenge & creating a possibility that would touch move & inspire people came to mind.

Why not get as many people as I could to commit to a day to go out and have fun & jump double dutch.  Its great exercise, great way to celebrate & highlight a beautiful part of our culture and besides you can't just come up with an idea & let it float away into the atmosphere right.

So before I knew what the heck I was doing it it turned into the : Double Dutch Jump-a-thon to raise money & awareness for Ovarian, Breast and Prostate Cancer Research. Sat. Oct 24th.  I started drafting people left and right.  And people started committing to participate by jumping or helping to organize it and support in whatever way they could.    Cool huh?

So here's the deal.  Because I'm working to eliminate procrastination from my life.  I set the date for Oct 24th.  That gives us just one month. No time to play around or make excuses.  Only enough time to make it happen.   I'm going to ask everyone who wants to participate to do 3 things.
    1. Invite girls, boys, women and men in your neighborhood to come outside and jump double dutch with you on Oct 24th.  Explain to them about raising money & awareness for Cancer Research and coming out to have some fun & be active.  And at least tell them that you need someone to turn the rope while you jump
    2. Ask people to sponsor you by donating $10, $25, $50 or $100 for your afternoon, morning or evening of jumping double dutch.  Let them know that their donation will be divided to go to 3 non-profit organizations. Collect and keep track of the amount you raise.
    3. Spread the word.  Blog about it, Tweet about it, Post it on Facebook or however else you like to get the word out.  We may even do a radio show about it.  Think big.
That's it.  Be the cause of something great for yourself, your neighborhood and as far you can reach.  If you know someone affected by Ovarian Cancer, Breast Cancer or Prostate cancer they'd appreciate what you're working to accomplish.

So work on your rhythm, get your ironclad bra, dust off those sneakers, turn the TV and video games off and get on the double dutch bus.

I think I can out jump you and raise more money for a good cause too.  Who's up for the challenge.  :-)     Join me on the High Road.

    Black Men Re-Inventing Ourselves

This episode of The High Road Show is going to be a conundrum of a puzzle wrapped inside an enigma. I'll be on the Road broadcasting from Williamstown NJ. At a birthday party for my 5 year old niece speaking with my guest Max Reddick on the Role Black Men need to play in the emerging Community that we are generating by Re-inventing ourselves. Every once in a while I like to shake up the snow globe. Should be pretty interesting. Check out Max Reddick's blog at http://soulbrotherv2.blogspot.com/. Then Hit the Road & Take a Ride with me.

The Solution To Your "Find A Good Man" Problem

Sisters this one is from you.  I have heard conversations for years ranging from outright man-bashing to pretty insightful wisdom on relationships and men from the female perspective.  Well I figured that I had a little something of value to add to the discussion.

Lately I have been engaging people in conversations about community.  What it means, what roles people play & what some of the different relationships are in a community.  Sorry if I offend the Independent women out there but:  You need a guardian.

    That's right I said it.

A Guardian.  Infact everyone, male or female should be able to point to another person who serves as their guardian.  Especially if you are single.  Just ride with me for a little while on this one.  Don't compare what I'm saying to what you know about how the world works.  The community I'm talking about doesn't exist along the common roads.  You have to take the High Road to see where I'm coming from.  :-)

Ladies identify someone in your life that 1) has proven that they will look out for your best interest 2) Is in tune with the God within AND 3) Has Good Sense.  Equal amounts of all 3 is ideal.  Tell them you trust their judgement and ask them to help you make the important decisions in your life.

Then before you go letting your feelings fool you into letting the wrong person get too close to you, send them to your Guardian.  The next time a man shows interest in you ask him "Can I have my 'guardian' call you?"  LOL I'm imagining the initial response.

If the conversation continues you can educate on how a community works & let them know that the bar has been raised.  If he's worth anything your guardian will give him a pass.  If not you don't have anymore gum stuck to the bottom of your shoe.

Cure for Insomnia - Deep Regenerating, Rejuvenating, Restorative Sleep

Bookmark and Share During the month of Ramadan I'm starting to notice a lot about how life works.  Especially all the ways my body lets me know I need to drink water or not eat so much or to get some rest.  Of course when you're a parent, spouse, employee, entrepreneur who's got time for stuff like that.

I know that I need to get up at 4:30am at least to get started.  But I rarely ever get to bed before 12:30am.  So what do I do to make sure that I fall asleep as quickly as possible and when I do sleep its Rejuvenating, Restorative and Regenerative?

    I recite this:

In the name of Allåh, the Beneficent,
    the Merciful.
1 Say: He, Allåh, is One.
2 Allåh is He on Whom all depend.
    3 He begets not, nor is He begotten;
4 And none is like Him.

In the name of Allåh, the Beneficent,
    the Merciful.
1 Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of
    the dawn,a
2 From the evil of that which He
    has created,
3 And from the evil of intense
    darkness,a when it comes,
4 And from the evil of those who cast
    (evil suggestions) in firm resolutions,a
5 And from the evil of the envier
    when he envies.

In the name of Allåh, the Beneficent,
    the Merciful.
1 Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of
    men,
    2 The King of men,
    3 The God of men,
4 From the evil of the whisperings of
    the slinking (devil),
5 Who whispers into the hearts of
    men,
6 From among the jinn and the men.

Then I say a prayer where I specifically ask to fall into a deep Rejuvenating, Restorative Regenerative sleep and wake up at (specific Time) so I can do what I have to do.

Then I set my alarm clock lay my head on my pillow & gradually let all the thought processes just fade away.

Works Like A Charm.  Thanks & Praise to the most High One.

Why We Men Can't or Don't Say what's Really What's On Our Minds

    Bookmark and Share

A friend from Twitter threw a question out & specifically asked for feedback from me.  Funny how I was reluctant to answer. :-)  She asked why we men can't just communicate & say what's really on our minds.

Now of course you know this is a question that has much more of an answer than this little blog post will provide. But there are two reasons that come to mind right off the bat.  Men's minds have multiple tracks of thought.

One track is focus. Whatever men are engrossed in at the moment is the most important thing at that moment.  It doesn't matter whether its important (solving a problem) or not important (just trying to not think).  Multitasking is really not a natural way to operate. Every thought has its own time & space. And most men just like to be about whatever it is they have decided to focus on as opposed to what you decide they should focus on.  Its my mind so let me use it the way I want to if you don't mind.

The second track of thought, and the one that may get me in trouble here, is a more subtle one. We men don't express ourselves as freely as we could in many cases because we are avoiding consequences.  Which I've come to learn is related to why we lie but that's for another post.  Men are always calculating on the outcome and unfortunately many times in a shortsighted way.  Open, authentic communication involves giving up the reigns of control and allowing someone to show you something about yourself that you might not want to acknowledge or focus on.  How many men you know are ready for that as soon as you get them home from the store?

Usually women want men to communicate about our feelings & emotions.  That is an intense area to deal in for men who have been conditioned to always have their dukes up.  When men give up that kind of control to someone else, through dialogue they are open to being judged, condemned, ridiculed, or just not accepted.  Who wants that?  Plus many times it leads to long drawn out dialogue.

Its easier to ignore & skirt around the real issue with a short quick answer.  Or deflect from getting to the heart of a matter by changing the subject.

Now can I go back to dozing while I watch the game & Tweet my twits please?  :-)
